Product Review: Olay Refreshing Toner

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Olay
Name: : Refreshing Toner
Size: 212 ml / 7.2 fl oz
Price: approx. $6 CAD

From their website: “Refreshing Toner is a low-alcohol,ndermatologist-tested formula containing aloe and witch hazel that cleans and refreshes without overdrying. Cleans by removing dirt, oil and makeup without stripping skin's essential moisture. Refreshes, leaving skin feeling cool and wonderfully fresh. Tones gently with a mild formula with added aloe and witch hazel.”

To Purr About:
- inexpensive
- removes dirt
- cooling sensation is very refreshing

Claws Out:
- bottle opening is large with makes spillage probable
- stings a bit
- super strong alcohol smell

Final Comments:
I`ve had pretty good experience with Olay products, so I was enthusiastic to try their toner and facial wash.

I was surprised when I started using this product that it had such a strong alcohol scent as they mention it is a “low-alcohol” product. I’m skeptical how low in alcohol content it is as alcohol is listed as the second ingredient on the package. It also stung a lot when I got some in my eye.

Other than that it seems like a good and inexpensive toner. Nothing fancy, but toners usually aren’t. It seems to strip skin of any extra dirt and leaves the skin feeling nice and refreshed which is good.

Product Review: Reviva Eye Complex Firming Cream

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Reviva
Name: : Eye Complex Firming Cream
Size: 3/4 oz
Price: $12 USD

Reviva Labs was started in 1973 by one of America's earliest aestheticians, Stephen Strassler and their products focus on natural ingredients, safe products and reasonable prices. Just reading through some of their products, I can easily see their products at home in a health food store as well as spas and salons.

Their range of products is really wide and varied, so there's definitely something for everyone and all the various skin/beauty problems out there.

I got to try a few of their products recently, so you'll see the product reviews on here soon, starting with this one.

The Eye Complex Firming Cream is for "under-eye shadows, bags and crows feet. This delicate eye area cream contains an herbal complex for firming, plant extracts to improve circulation and vegetable oils to aid dryness."

To Purr About:
- rich feeling cream that isn't greasy or oily
- a little bit of cream goes a long way
- absorbs quickly
- goes on easily with no tugging
- no fragrance that I could detect

Claws Out:
- none really

Final Comments:
Even though the use of eye creams have come under debate lately (with some experts saying they don't actually do anything at all), I still like using something different in my eye area because my normal facial moisturizer has SPF in it and whenever I get anything with SPF near my eyes, it BURNS! So, I still use eye creams.

I really liked this eye cream for all the reasons listed above - it's fragrance free, very rich, but non-greasy, goes on easily and absorbs quickly. The price tag is really good compared to a lot of the other eye creams in my cabinet and I found that the skin under my eye area was really smooth after application.

This was my first exposure to a Reviva Labs product and it's a definitely a positive one. I'm looking forward to trying more from this brand and seeing what other gems they have in their product line!

Beauty shopping online, Australian edition

One of the best things, to a beauty addict anyway, about the internet is the wealth of information out there, but also the chance to be introduced to new brands from around the world AND to have a chance to try these products out for ourselves!

One lovely site that I've just been introduced to that's based in Australia is Catwalk.

Starting out as a chain of hair salons in Sydney and Brisbane (where, I'm told they are pretty popular, Catwalk eventually expanded into an online retail store and fashion brand. It's the retail online store that got me. They have lots of great brands, including ones that I'm quite familiar with and others that are less well known on this side of the globe.

The best thing is that Catwalk ships to pretty much all major countries, which means I get to try out some previously unkonwn-to-me brands! Yay!

So, watch for product reviews soon, but in the meantime, why not take a quick walk down the Catwalk and see what catches your eye?

Product Review: Olay Foaming Face Wash

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Olay
Name: : Foaming Face Wash
Size: 200 mL / 6.78 fl. oz.
Price: approx. $8 CAD

From their website: “Gently cleanse away dirt, oil and make-up without over-drying skin.

- Cleanses skin
- Helps skin retain its natural moisture
- Contains oil-free moisturizers”

To Purr About:
- convenient dispensing pump that can be locked-off
- very gentle on my skin
- leaves skin feeling moisturized and silky
- affordable price

Claws Out:
- leaves a residue feeling on skin after rinsing
- doesn’t fight acne / oily skin

Final Comments:
I’ve been using Olay’s Foaming Face Wash for a few weeks now and although I enjoy how gentle it is on my skin, it might be too gentle. Meaning my skin (which is oily type) is still very oily. I’ve tried many face washes and would prefer one that helps fight the oiliness a bit more. I don’t know if this is the best choice for people with oily or acne prone skin.

That being said I think this is a great product for people with normal to dry skin. It leaves my skin feeling very silky and moisturized, has a nice subtle scent and comes in a super convenient pump dispenser.

Product Review: Dermagenics Ultra-Intensive Anti-Aging Moisturizer

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Dermagenics
Name: : Ultra-Intensive Anti-Aging Moisturizer
Size: 1.7 oz / 50 g
Price: $85 USD

Dermagenics ultra-intensive anti-aging moisturizer with peptides is made without toxins, getting its powerful anti-aging benefits from pure, proven ingredients.

- improves skin quality and reverses the signs of aging
- physician formulated with a breakthrough blend of superior ingredients
- rejuvenates skin with an advanced peptide cellular repair formula
- hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic

This product claims to:
- reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles wherever they occur: forehead, between brows, crow's feet, crepey eyelids, laugh lines, wrinkles at the throat and neck
- shrink large pores
- reduce under-eye puffiness and dark circles
- promote a firmer, more toned look and feel
- brighten the skin
- replace foundation primer by creating a smooth surface for makeup application and longevity.

To Purr About:
- extemely light feeling cream
- absorbs quickly
- very light fragrance
- delivers instant moisture to dry skin

Claws Out:
- expensive

Final Comments:
I love the feel of this cream. It's very light, not greasy at all and a little goes a very long way. The scent is extremely light (not flowery) and I love that it absorbs within seconds, leaving my skin feeling very moisturized.

I must admit that winter leaves my skin very dry and usually it takes quite a bit of moisturizer to keep my skin feeling healthy, but I only need a little of this Dermagenics moisturizer and my skin feels great. A couple of minutse after application, the cream has already been absorbed and my skin feels really smooth and not-dry at all.

As with all anti-aging products, it's hard to test if a lot of its claims are true without using the product for a longer period of time. My skin feels a lot better since I started using this regularly, but I'm not sure if it's really done away with my fine lines and wrinkles.

The only drawback is that this product is fairly expensive so it may not be for everyone's budget, but if you have a chance to try this, I highly recommend it.

Introducing Glowing Beauty

One of the biggest complaints that many of my fellow Canadians have is that there are a lot of lovely beauty products on the market that we don't have access to. In recent years, it's been getting better (remember when Sephora first came north of the border?) and there are more options than ever.

A new site that I've just been introduced to recently is Glowing Beauty at www.glowingbeauty.ca. A Canadian owned and operated website, Glowing Beauty carries some of my favourite brands such as California Mango, Clarisonic, Joici, Revitalash, Fusion Beauty, China Glaze, Essie and OPI. They ship from Vancouver, BC and with over 2,000 products in stock, Glowing Beauty offers Canadians the chance to purchase exclusive spa and salon products, and physician-strength, dermatologist tested products.

Glowing Beauty also offers free shipping on orders over $50 in Canada and a rewards points system.

Product Review: Blistex Silk & Shine

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Blistex
Name: : Silk & Shine
Size: 3.69 g
Price: approx. $4.49 CAD

From their website: "Silk & Shine’s unique silk and vitamin formula makes lips feel satiny smooth and enhances their natural appearance with a light glossy shine.

Silk & Shine feels satiny soft going on and leaves your lips feeling that way. Silk extracts, special moisturizers and vitamin A, B5, and E help create a silky texture that makes lip surfaces smooth and supple. It feels great.

Silk & Shine imparts a touch of sheer gloss to the lips for a healthy, finished appearance. Your lips will look as good as they feel.”

To Purr About:
- provides SPF15 protection
- provides a nice glossy shine to my lips
- glides on easily and feels very silky
- makes lips feel moisturized
- doesn’t irritate my super sensitive lips

Claws Out:
- doesn’t last super long

Final Comments:
Ever since I got back from vacation and away from the humid hot weather my lips have been chapped and feeling quite gross. Since I was running low on lip balm, I decided to pick up a new one I’ve never tried since the Body Shop’s Lip Butter (which I love) is so hard to find in stock and is a bit pricey. I’ve used Blistex lip balms before, but found they weren’t moisturizing enough, so I was intrigued when I saw they had a line of more specialized lip balms and figured I’d give their lip balms another try.

I never really cared about my lip products having SPF until the last couple of years. My lips especially are quite sensitive so the last thing I need are sunburnt lips. So I love that this product has SPF15. Another pro of this product is that it doesn’t irritate my super sensitive lips. Very few lip products have passed this requirement, so when I find another product that I can use I am very happy.

Blistex`s Silk & Shine feels really great on my lips. It glides on effortlessly and makes my lips feel super silky. Not only that but it gives my lips a nice looking shine. My only complaint is that it`s not longer lasting.

Product Review: The Body Shop Mango Shower Gel

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: The Body Shop
Name: : Mango Shower Gel
Size: 250 mL / 8.4 fl oz
Price: approx. $13 CAD

From their website: "Best if you want to: Revive your senses in the bath or shower as you cleanse your skin using a moisture-rich gel with the sweet, exotic scent of mango.

Best for: very dry skin

How it works: Mango seed extract helps to soften and moisturize skin without it feeling greasy. The soap-free formulation is less drying to the skin than soap."

To Purr About:
- lathers up very well
- subtle fruity scent that isn’t overpowering
- rinses clean
- refreshing and fresh

Claws Out:
- not super moisturizing
- a bit pricey

Final Comments:
When I first squeezed this product on to my loofa I was a bit hesitant as it
seemed thinner than other body washes I’ve tried and figured I’d need to use a
ton each time, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it lathered up. A little of
this mango shower gel goes a long way, so perhaps the slightly higher price point
balances out in the end.

I found the scent of this product very nice and refreshing – not overpowering.

The only thing really negative I can come up with for this product is it’s not quite
as moisturizing as my skin needs in the harsh winter conditions. However, I
would recommend this product for people with normal skin.

Product Review: GOSH Velvet Touch Eye Primer

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: GOSH
Name: : Velvet Touch Eye Primer
Size: 15 ml / 0.5 fl oz US
Price: approx. $17 CAD

I normally use Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion, but I'm always looking out for new primers to try, particularly since I don't like Urban Decay's bottle design (there's so much primer left in the bottle that's hard to get at). So I decided to give this Gosh product a try.

From their web site: "especially designed to instantly fill in laugh lines and evens out crow's feet. It's a silky smooth formula that can be used alone or under your foundation, eye shadow, pigments or concealer. The perfect base for all kinds of make-up. Perfume and preservative free."

To Purr About:
- after application, skin is silky to the touch
- a tiny bit goes a really long way
- makes my eyelid super smooth
- if you wait long enough for the product to fully dry and set, it helps eyemakeup set
- no colour, so it goes on invisibly

Claws Out:
- slightly greasy when first applied
- takes quite a long time to dry compared to other primers
- if you don't wait long enough for the product to dry, then eye makeup will slide, smudge and come right off

Final Comments:
Although the product makes my eyelid super smooth and silky, as a primer, I'm not that impressed. The first several times I used the product, I waited a couple of minutes before applying my eyeliner and eye shadow, which is generally how long I wait for my regular primer to set. The eyeliner glided right onto my eyelid, but then when I opened my eye, the eyeliner had smudged onto my eyelid and when I lightly touched the eyeliner, it came right off.

After that experience, I tried waiting about 5 minutes for the primer to dry. It worked much better and my eye makeup stayed on much better.

I must say that this does make my eye lid feel amazingly smooth. Unfortunately, I'm kind of impatient in the mornings, when time is tight and I'm getting ready for work. Since most of the other eye primers I've tried dry much more quickly and set makeup even better, this product is probably best used when you have more time to spare.

Product Review: Lise Watier Mineral Compact Powder

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Lise Watier
Name: :Mineral Compact Powder
Size: 10 g / 0.35 oz
Price: approx. $35 CAD

Shade Tried: Natural

As soon as I saw this product, I was immediately impressed with the packaging and design of the compact. The idea that it included oil-blotting sheets was genius, because sometimes, I just want to blot the shine away, not add more powder onto my face. Love the idea, so I was pretty excited to try this out.

The mineral powder is fragrance-free, talc-free and paraben-free, but includes Tourmaline, Vitamin A, E and Camomile.

Comes with 30 Oil Blotting Papers (refills cost $8 CAD for 30 sheets)

To Purr About:
- light, airy powder is really natural looking on the skin
- smart packaging in the compact - still light and easy to use, with a large mirror
- love that it includes oil blotting sheets and powder in one compact

Claws Out:
- if you use a primer, like I do, the mineral powder doesn't seem to mesh well with it
- the sponge applicator is too light and flimsy and is difficult to use

Final Comments:
I'm disappointed with this product because it has the potential to be get a 5-paw rating, but there are a few drawbacks that keep it from a perfect rating. The innovative packaging of oil-blotting sheets and powder compact is amazing. The powder itself is light and airy, yet provides a good amount of coverage. The oil blotting sheets work perfectly well. The compact itself is nicely designed, with an easy-open latch and a nice, large mirror.

Unfortunately, because I use a primer before I put on my makeup, the mineral powder doesn't mesh well with it and it leaves lots of little flakes on my skin. If I use the powder without any primer, it works much better. I think this may be something that all mineral powders may do. I don't normally use mineral powders, so I've never really experienced it, although several readers have told me that their primers also react with various mineral foundations.

The other big drawback is the thin applicator "sponge" (it's not really a sponge) that comes with it. It's a thin applicator, with a soft side that's really difficult to use. It's so thin that it irritated my skin - it felt like I was trying to put the powder on with a piece of paper - and the resulting application was uneven. I gave up after a couple of days and used my own brush, which is great when you're at home, but not so handy when you're out.

With just a few tweaks, this could be a great product.

Product Review: eos Tangerine Medicated Anti-Bacterial Lip Balm Smooth Sphere

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: eos
Name: : Tangerine Medicated Anti-Bacterial Lip Balm Smooth Sphere
Size: n/a
Price: approx. $3.29 USD

eos has created a new addition to their Smooth Sphere lip balms - the Tangerine Medicated Anti-Bacterial Lip Balm Smooth Sphere.

This little round lip balm includes antioxidants, zinc, vitamins C and E, shea butter and jojoba oil.

Other features:
- medicated anti-bacterial lip protection helps sooth dry lips and alleviate cold sore symptoms
- petroleum and paraben-free
- not tested on animals

I've already tried the eos smooth sphere lip balm so was interested in trying the medicated version to see the difference between this and the regular Smooth Sphere. (Many of the things I like and dislike about the original Smooth Sphere lip balm will again show up in this review).

To Purr About:
- nice, light tangerine scent isn't overpowering
- round little sphere has a light, rubbery feeling, making it non-slippery and easy to hold
- very easy to apply onto lips

Claws Out:
- not as moisturizing as the regular eos lip balm
- as with the other Smooth Sphere, it shape and size of the packaging makes it awkward to carry around
- this lip balm isn't as "soft" as the regular eos lip balm (or other lip balms) so it takes a few more swipes across my lips for full coverage

Final Comments:
The main difference I noticed when comparing the medicated eos Smooth Sphere to the original is that the lip balm seems to be "harder", so that it takes a few more swipes across the lips to feel like I've applied enough of it, plus there is a slight medicinal smell over the tangerine scent. It also provides a light tingle, which the regular, non-medicated eos lip balm doesn't have.

As with the original Smooth Sphere, the shape of sphere, while cute and easy to use, doesn't make it an ideal lip balm to tuck into your purse or pocket. I find I don't take the Spheres out as much as I do slimmer lip balms, but it's still one of my favourite ones to use at home.

I'm lucky to not suffer much from cold sores, so I don't know how effective this is in alleviating cold sore symptoms, but I do notice that this lip balm does a good job of keeping my lips soft during the colder months.
