Product Review: Costa Blu Dry Oil Body Spray

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Costa Blu
Name: Dry Oil Body Spray
Size: 150mL
Price: n/a

Scent Tried: Honey, Lemon and Sweet Almond

The Costa Blu line was introduced this past year, and is a premium line of bath and body products only available at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada. Their products are not only affordable, but allow us to bring a bit of the spa in to our home.

With the dry winter weather hitting us full force I have to try new products as my regular products just aren’t cutting it.

Cinnamon Kitten previously reviewed the Honey, Lemon and Sweet Almond Body Lotion, so I was curious how this product line would be on my skin.

To Purr About:
- convenient pump dispenser
- lemony scent
- very light – not heavy or oily

Claws Out:
- leaves my skin feeling a little bit greasy
- doesn’t leave my skin feeling very moisturized

Final Comments:
I don’t think I’ve ever tried a spray on product to help cure me of my dry skin. And when I first pumped some of this product on to my skin, I was scared it would be super greasy, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Unfortunately it didn’t leave my skin feeling as moisturized and smooth as I was hoping it would. I’m not sure if this is really the fault of the product or the fact that I have extremely dry and finicky skin. I’m also not a huge fan of the smell - it reminded me of Pledge and I felt like just finished polishing a coffee table or something.

All in all I don’t think I’ll be keeping this product in regular routine – it just wasn’t as luxurious as I hope it would be. On to the next product!

Product Review: Surge Tropical Bergamot Shower Gel

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Organic Surge
Name: Tropical Bergamot Shower Gel
Size: 250 mL
Price: approx. $7 CAD

I am currently in love with Organic Surge’s citrus mint shampoo, so I was excited to try another one of their products.

From their website: "A happy blend of 91% naturally derived ingredients and certified organic extracts. For happy-ever-after skin...tropical bergamot body scrub gently exfoliates your skin to leave it smooth and refreshed, while our organic essential oil fragrance blend transports you to your dream desert island."

To Purr About:
- very subtle, but nice, fresh plant smell
- left skin feeling smooth and moisturized
- lathered up well
- available for sale in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart

Claws Out:
- none really

Final Comments:
I really liked Organic Surge’s shower gel. The scent was fresh and pleasant and wasn’t too overpowering. And I found my skin felt much moisturized after using. I would definitely use this product again.

So far Organic Surge’s products are impressing me. I really love their citrus mint shampoo, and really like this product as well. Next time I think I’ll pick up the citrus mint scented body wash to try though, because that scent sent me over the moon!

Product Review: NARS Sabrina Lip Treatment - SPF 20

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: NARS
Name: Sabrina Lip Treatment - SPF 20
Size: 0.12 oz / 3.4 g
Price: $23 USD

"Softens, smoothes and protects lips from becoming dry and chapped. Includes SPF 20 sun protection. Infused with an uplifting melon scent and a subtle pink shimmer for healthy, natural looking lips...Vitamin E conditions lips." (from the NARS site)

With winter in full swing here in Toronto, I find myself grabbing lip balms much more often than lipsticks or even lip glosses. So now I'm always on the lookout for great balms that also have a hint of colour.

To Purr About:
- light, pale pink colour is sheer, but very pretty
- melon smell was unexpected, but really sweet and lovely
- goes on smoothly, doesn't clump or feather
- light formula is barely noticeable on the lips

Claws Out:
- isn't as rich as other lip balms, so I don't feel it's as moisturizing as some other brands
- a little expensive compared to other lip balms I've been using

Final Comments:
The price point makes this more of a "once in a while" lip treatment rather than an "every day lip balm", but when I do use it, I love it. The sheer pink shimmer, lovely melon smell and smooth, light formula make this a great treat for the lips.

Product Review: Neutrogena rainbath Skin Softening Shower & Bath Gel

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Neutrogena
Name: rainbath Skin Softening Shower & Bath Gel
Size: 250 ml
Price: approx. $9.99 USD

A rich, refreshing gel enriched with gentle softening ingredients that help to clean and moisturize skin. The hypo-allergenic formula leaves the body feeling clean, smooth and renewed. The rich scent is a blend of spicy, fruits and herbs that awaken the senses, while softening and conditioning the skin.

Rich lather cleans deeply and improves the look and feel of skin. Non-comedogenic, hypo-allergenic formula.

To Purr About:
- very moisturizing
- spicy, fruity scent is nice in the shower and leaves a light, lingering scent
- leaves my skin super-soft and moisturized

Claws Out:
- doesn't rather up "richly" as it claims

Final Comments:
I'm already a major fan of Neutrogena and every time I try another Neutrogena product, it just re-confirms why. Rainbath is super-rich and smells amazing and leaves my skin super-soft and hydrated. Even in the bone-chilling and drying Canadian winter, my skin feels amazing after using rainbath in the shower. I didn't think I'd like the scent as much as I do, but it's a nice, spicy scent that is stronger in the shower, but is quite light afterwards.

Product Review: Soap & Glory Clean on Me

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Soap & Glory
Name: Clean on Me
Size: 480 ml / 16.2 US fl oz
Price: approx. $9.99 CAD

A super-sized shower gel with a built-in body lotion. Fragranced with Soap & Glory's signature scent and with a rich and creamy texture.

Available exclusively in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart.

To Purr About:
- very light, clean fragrance
- light lather
- left my skin clean and moisturized
- huge size is very economical
- convenient pump

Claws Out:
- lather wasn't as "full" and rich as I like

Final Comments:
I've never tried anything from Soap & Glory before, but was attracted to its bright pink colour and bol, fun packaging. This body wash is like and leaves skikn clean and soft, although it's still not super-moisturizing enough for Canadian winters. It would be a great cleanser for the summer and I love the light, clean scent. The big bottle and pump are super easy to use in the shower and you get a lot for your money.

Product Review: Your Best Face Correct

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Your Best Face
Name: Correct
Size: 0.5 oz.
Price: $150 USD

My eye area always gives me probelms, especially in the dry Canadian winters. It gets so bad I even get dry rashing near my eyes sometimes which is very annoying. So I’m always on the look out for products to help me keep that area nice and moisturized. Since I really enjoyed YBF’s Restore product, I figured I might also like their Correct product that is targeted for the eye area.

Instructions: twice daily, dispense a small dot of cream and smooth around the area of each eye. Avoid direct eye contact.

To Purr About:
- awesome and convenient pump that meant not an ounce was wasted
- quite moisturizing for my eye area

Claws Out:
- a bit pricey
- didn’t work well with makeup

Final Comments:
After using this product for a bit I realized it was only practical for me to use it once a day in the evenings before bed, because applying makeup on top of it in the mornings was just not working for me. The makeup just slid right off.

Although I found this product quite moisturizing, it didn’t blow my mind away and I still saw small wrinkles and dark circles. I don’t think I would pay such a high price for this product. I’d much rather save my money up for YBF’s awesome Restore cream.

Product Review: J.Lynne Floss FX Lip Glaze

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: J.Lynne
Name: Floss FX Lip Glaze
Size: Sample Jar
Price: $2 USD for sample size; $12 USD for full size

Colour Tried: Penelope

I’ve recently been obsessed with finding that perfect lipstick to complete my look (or help it along at least). But I have super-sensitive lips, so it’s very hard to find a non-drying lipstick out there.

I heard about J.Lynne and their products looked so cute, I couldn’t help but try them.

"The ultimate long-lasting, glossy-shine, all natural lip gloss is finally here! J.Lynne Cosmetics Gloss FX Lip Glaze brings pizzazz to your pout with lush, juicy colors that give your lips an incredible dose of shine, color, and moisture. Think your lips are in need of some special effects? Give 'em Gloss FX and shine like a star!" (from the J.Lynne site)

To Purr About:
- lots of fabulous colours to choose from
- sample sizes available for sale
- glides on effortlessly
- very light feeling
- subtle colour, but gives me that glossy look
- does not irritate my lips

Claws Out:
- doesn’t give your lips that dramatic uber gloss look

Final Comments:
How amazing is it that J.lynne offers sample sized jars of their lip glaze so you can have fun trying out different colours without breaking the bank? That way you can be sure that the colour you decide to buy of the full version is one you will really love.

I really enjoyed this lip gloss. The colour was very subtle and natural looking and I just loved having it on. It was super light and I easily forgot it was even there. It’s definitely a great gloss, but the colour didn’t give me that dramatic and plastic look I was going for.

All in all it was a great gloss. It lasted decently long (for a gloss), and didn’t irritate my super sensitive lips. I definitely think I will be trying out the other lip-gloss colours by J.lynne.

Check out the J.Lynne web site for more information.

Product Review: Neutrogena Body Oil

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Neutrogena
Name: Body Oil
Size: 250mL
Price: n/a

Scent Tried: Original (Sesame) Formula

Summer is gone, which means my skin is dry and irritated! I am determined not to suffer flaky skin this year, so I have decided to take drastic measures and try some new things.

I’ve always had lots of luck with Neutrogena products (like their amazing toner) and Cinnamon Kitten suggested I try their Body Oil product.

"Body Oil is a delicately light sesame formula that instantly vanishes into the skin, sealing in moisture. Skin feels moisturized, soft, silky and looks radiant."
(from the Neutrogena site)

To Purr About:
- not greasy
- absorbs quickly in to the skin
- soothes dry and itchy skin
- leaves my skin feeling super moisturized, soft and supple
- helped reduce the itchiness of my skin

Claws Out:
- soapy scent might be a bit overpowering for some people
- very messy – hard to control how much comes out of the bottle
- adds another step to the daily beauty regime

Final Comments:
I’ve tried Aveeno’s bath oil to help with my dry, itchy skin and it worked well, but I’m always on the look out for that perfect product. I was really impressed with this one. It leaves my skin feeling so super moisturized, soft and supple.

I didn’t mind the scent of this product too much, but some people (like my brother-in-law) hates it. So it’s really too bad that the fragrance-free version isn’t sold in Canada.

My only other major complaint would be why they didn’t put this product in a pump dispenser. It’s as messy as baby oil!

Other than that it was a great product that seems to help my skin battle the dry winter weather conditions. I’m still torn as to which one I prefer – the Aveeno product or the Neutrogena product. I think the Neutrogena product gives a longer lasting moisturized feeling, but is more intrusive than the Aveeno product.

Product Review: Out of Africa Shea Butter Body Oil

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Out of Africa
Name: Shea Butter Body Oil
Size: 8 fl. oz / 240 ml
Price: approx. $24 USD

Scent Tried: Grapefruit

"Loaded with pure unrefined shea butter and infused with avocado, sweet almond and oilive oils that transport your skin to new levels of luxury and moisture. This high performance formula glides on smoothly while quickly and deeply penetrating into the skin. The quick drying formula is never greasy and leaves skin with a soft, sexy sheen." (from the NARS site)

Available in Unscented, Grapefruit, Lavender or Verbena.

Always on the hunt for the next big thing to make my skin super soft, I rarely find any moisturizers or creams that live up to my criteria of a product that delivers maximum moisturization with minimal greasiness and super-fast absorption.

Plus, you can feel good about purchasing Out of Africa products. This line's natural, unrefined shea butter products are handmade in Benin, West Africa and help to create jobs at women’s co-ops. Out of Africa also contributes 3% of all sales to School Children Unite, an initiative that helps provide education to children in West Africa.

To Purr About:
- all natural ingredients
- comes with both a spritzer pump top or a screw-on spout for a choice of application
- works best right after a shower/bath, when skin is still damp
- did leave my skin really soft and smooth after it dried

Claws Out:
- grapefruit scent is a little too strong for me (Unscented would probably be my choice) and has a woodsy smell to it
- does not absorb as quickly as I would have liked
- leaves a greasy feeling that I kind of expected since it's an "oil" product

Final Comments:
Although I love the all natural ingredients and the philosophy of Out of Africa, I wasn't blown away with the Shea Butter Body Oil. It doesn't absorb completely and leaves that oily, greasy feeling that I get from many other body oils, and is usually the main reason I don't use body oils. I can't deny that it does leave my skin very moisturized, but it's a trade-off.

For those of you that love body oils (and I have a few friends that swear by them), this is a great product as it does deliver a big boost of moisturization and skin softness.

Check out the Out of Africa web site for more information.

Product Review: NARS Makeup Primer with SPF

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: NARS
Name: Makeup Primer with SPF
Size: 1.7 fl. oz / 50 ml
Price: $33 USD

"Combines soothing and hydrating ingredients with a full spectrum of sun protection to create a perfect canvas for natural-looking and long-lasting foundation application. The translucent, lightweight formula is designed to be applied before makeup or worn alone to prepare, nourish and hydrate skin, while helping to ease redness, reduce inflammation and improve the skin’s overall texture and quality. The unique dual protection formula offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays with a combined SPF 20 and PA++, while additional antioxidant protection helps to fight free radical damage. Whether worn under foundation, powder or alone, the result is translucent, healthy looking skin." (from the NARS site)

Ok, ever since I fell in love with Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer, I haven't been able to put on makeup without primer on my face. It makes the makeup last so much longer, mattes down my oily skin a bit and also smoothes out the skin and the makeup seems to go on much more smoothly and requires a much lighter touch.

I did stray away from Smashbox to try Quo's Face Primer, which wasn't as good, but for the lower price, a much more economical choice. I jumped at the chance to try out the NARS primer, to see how it stacked up against the others.

To Purr About:
- extremely light formula goes on easily, a little goes a long way
- is a cream, which is different from both Quo and Smashbox, which are both gels
- no fragrance
- dries almost instantly into a smooth, slightly (extremly slightly) rubbery feeling
- makeup goes on smoothly and lasts quite a long time
- added bonus of SPF 20
- comes in a tube, rather than a pump bottle (like Smashbox and Quo) which means you can get every last drop (whereas I find the Smashbox and Quo collect in the square bottle corners and are impossible to get out)

Claws Out:
- a little more expensive than the Quo primer (but cheaper than Smashbox)

Final Comments:
The price falls right in between the other two primers I've tried, so it's a nice medium option. I LOVE that it comes in a tube since I can never get to the corners of the square Quo and Smashbox bottles to get the remainder product, which means it gets wasted. And the added bonus of SPF is really nice too.

I've become a real fan of NARS products and this primer doesn't disappoint.

How amazing is it that J.Lynne offers sample-sized jars of all their products so you can have fun trying out different colours without breaking the bank? That way you can be sure that the colour you decide to buy of the full version is one you will really love.

I really enjoyed the sample of Flamenco that I tried. It was a bit more blushing and bright than my usual blush, but I liked it. It gave me that glow. It was so super light feeling I was so surprised that the pigments were so vibrant. Only a tiny bit was required.
