Product News: Coppertone launches new products for 2011

Brand: Coppertone

Yes, I know it's still only spring here in Canada (and it's raining and 8 degrees Celcius here in Toronto), but I LOVE dreaming about the days when it's sunny and hot, so when Coppertone sent over info about their new products for 2011 I couldn't wait to see what new sun products I might be trying out very soon (fingers crossed!)

Coppertone Sport High Performance Sunscreen Lotion SPF 100+
20 years after the makers of Coppertone created the sport category and launched its iconic high performance sunscreens, this new addition is specially formulated for active adults and is ultra sweatproof so it won't run into eyes and sting. It also contains antioxidants for extreme conditions that trigger sweating (heat, humidity, vigorous exercise) which can make skin more vulnerable to UV damage. Added antioxidants help replenish skin's natural defenses.

Coppertone Water Babies Pure & Simple Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
Offers tear-free, broad spectrum sun protection in a 2 oz. size ideal for the diaper bag. The formula is oil and fragrance-free, and ultra gentle for babies’ delicate skin and eyes.

Coppertone Tanning Lotion SPF 15
A non-greasy formula offering broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection with the classic Coppertone fragrance. Formulated with Aloe and Vitamin E and provides a moisturizing and fast-absorbing lotion.

Besides the new additions to the Coppertone family, the big news from Merck Consumer Care (makers of Coppertone) are the new foaming lotion sunscreens. The light, moisture-rich foams absorb quickly, and offer waterproof sun protection.

"My patients are constantly asking about lightweight suncare products that will help protect their skin from the sun without irritating it," said Dr. David J. Leffell, Professor of Dermatology and Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and consultant for the COPPERTONE brand. "The most effective formulas are those that help consumers make sun protection convenient – sunscreen can be soft and gentle to the skin while providing powerful, broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays."

Coppertone Oil Free Foaming Sunscreen Lotion SPF 75+
Offers broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays in a foam for everyday use to help keep skin looking healthy and beautiful. The hypoallergenic formula comes in a silky-soft application that is fragrance-free and won't clog pores.

Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Foaming Lotion SPF 75+
Soft and gentle for babies’ skin; non-irritating and offers broad spectrum, waterproof sun protection.

Product Review: Hawaiian Tropic Lime Coolada After Sun Moisturizer

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Hawaiian Tropic
Name: : Lime Coolada After Sun Moisturizer
Size: 480 ml
Price: $10.99 CAD

During my honeymoon in Hawaii I learned a lot about suncare, and how to preserve a nice tan. :)

One of the most important things to after-sun care is good moisturization. Keeping the skin moisturized and soft is really important as the sun can really damage the skin.

I've always used Hawaiian Tropic regularly for sun-protection products, but have never tried their after-sun products so was excited to give it a try.

To Purr About:
- a lovely, light tropical fragrance
- easy to use pump bottle
- creamy moisturizer is light and absorbs fairly quickly
- huge bottle for a good price

Claws Out:
- none really

Final Comments:
My husband and I have always loved Hawaiian Tropic products because the smell makes us think of summer. It's tropical and light and just...summer-y. So I was pleasantly surprised when this product didn't have the normal, signature Hawaiian Tropic scent, but something seriously addictive. It's called Lime Coolada and I love it. I think it's my official new smell of summer.

The moisturizer works really well and is easily absorbed. It makes my skin feel moisturized and less tight. The huge bottle (with handy pump) is a great value and definitely a useful product to have during the summer.

NEW Product: UVSunSense

Name: UVSunSense
Price: approx. $6 USD for a pack of 7

This is a very cool new summer product that I had to share with all you sun goddesses out there.
It's a simple, easy to use wristband that helps people avoid overexposure in the sun. The wristband actually changes colour at different times depending on the SPF level. It can be used in water (salt water, fresh water, chlorine, etc) and will let you know what it's time to reapply sunscreen or get out of the sun altogether!

There are 4 colour states:
- Orange - when initially removed from package
- Pruple - when exposed to sun, indicating it has been activated
- Dark Brown - time to re-apply sun protection
- Salmon - Time to get out of the sun

Visit their website for more information and to see all the colour stages of this wristband: http://www.uvsunsense.com/

Product Review: Banana Boat Sport Dri-Blok

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Banana Boat
Name: Sport Dri-Blok
Size: 180 mL
Price: approx. $10 CAD

SPF Protection: 30
Format: bottle

Claims:
- waterproof
- sweatproof

PLEASE NOTE: Because everyone's skin tone is so different and some people burn much more quickly than others, I have asked all Sun Product reviewers to NOT review sun products for their ability to protect you from getting burnt. You must use your own judgement to choose the right SPF level. Instead, we'll comment on other features (scent, oiliness, etc)

"Goes on like a lotion, dries like a powder"

To Purr About:
- waterproof and sweatproof
- very light cream almost instantly absorbs into skin
- no greasy after-feel
- dries so quickly, there's very little chance of sand sticking on your skin
- fragrant, banana-sweet smell

Claws Out:
- would love it if the fragrance wasn't so strong

Final Comments:
This is one of the lightest sunblocks I've ever tried in terms of feel. It's an extremely light cream that instantly absorbs into my skin and left no oily/greasy after-feel. I was quite impressed with how quickly it absorbed and how it felt afterwards. After 5 minutes, it felt as if I hadn't put on any sunblock at all! The only thing that kept me from giving this a perfect score is the fragrance - it's the typical tropical-banana smell, but it's a little too strong for me.

Product Review: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Neutrogena
Name: Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen
Size: 88 mL
Price: approx.

SPF Protection: 55 (also available in 70 and 85)
Format: tube

Claims:
- waterproof
- sweatproof
- rubproof
- oil-free

PLEASE NOTE: Because everyone's skin tone is so different and some people burn much more quickly than others, I DO NOT review sun products for their ability to protect you from getting burnt. You must use your own judgement to choose the right SPF level. Instead, I'll comment on other features (scent, oiliness, etc)

To Purr About:
- light pleasant slightly-floral fragrance that smells more like a perfume than a sun-protection product
- thick, creamy formula
- absorbs quickly and doesn't leave a greasy feel, after a couple of minutes, doesn't feel like you're wearing anything at all
- small tube is convenient for toting around

Claws Out:
- after a day of wear, there was a slight rubbery, gritty feel to my shoulders and arms

Final Comments:
I would definitely take this sunscreen with me to the beach. It's light, absorbs quickly and has a high-enough SPF to protect from the sun.

Product Review: Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Sunblock Gel

Reviewer: S.K.Y.

Brand: Neutrogena
Name: Fresh Cooling Sunblock Gel
Size: 118 mL
Price: approx. $15 CAD

SPF Protection: 45 (also available in 30)
Format: tube

Claims:
- waterproof
- sweatproof
- oil-free

PLEASE NOTE: Because everyone's skin tone is so different and some people burn much more quickly than others, I have asked all Sun Product reviewers to NOT review sun products for their ability to protect you from getting burnt. You must use your own judgement to choose the right SPF level. Instead, we'll comment on other features (scent, oiliness, etc)

To Purr About:
- waterproof & sweatproof
- does not leave a greasy feel
- small package which is convenient
- subtle pleasant smell – unlike other sunblocks I have tried
- slightly cooling
- I did not burn

Claws Out:
- not as "cooling" as I would like
- weird flaking when being applied

Final Comments:
I was reading an article in the Toronto Star about sunblocks and after reviewing a few, they highly recommended the Neutrogena line of sunblocks, so I was pretty stocked to give this product a try. Even after being stored outside in my bag for a day during high temperatures, it was still slightly cooling which was impressive and very nice to the skin. I was out in the sun & water for the whole day and did not burn or really have to re-apply. The only thing was that it made the sand stick to me right after application, but obviously that can’t really be avoided.

Product Review: Hawaiian Tropic Sunblock

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Hawaiian Tropic
Name: Sunblock
Size: 240 mL
Price: approx. $10 CAD

SPF Protection: 30 (also available in 15, 45, 70 and travel sizes for 15 and 45)
Format: bottle

Claims:
- waterproof
- oil-free

PLEASE NOTE: Because everyone's skin tone is so different and some people burn much more quickly than others, I WILL NOT review sun products for their ability to protect you from getting burnt. You must use your own judgement to choose the right SPF level. Instead, I'll comment on other features (scent, oiliness, etc)

To Purr About:
- thick creamy formula
- absorbs quickly - after I rubbed it in it didn't leave any greasy after-feel or oil on my skin
- very moisturizing

Claws Out:
- the signature "Hawaiian Tropic" smell - a mixture of banana and coconut is slightly too strong for me
- a pretty thick cream - takes some good rubbing to get it all absorbed

Final Comments:
This is definitely a "beach" or "vacation" sunblock. The coconut smell that I've come to expect from Hawaiian Tropic is a little too strong for everyday where, but would be perfect on a tropical island somewhere!

Product Review: Aveeno Sunblock Lotion

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Aveeno
Name: Sunblock Lotion
Size: 109 mL
Price: approx. $15 CAD

SPF Protection: 30 (also available in 15, 45, 70 and travel sizes for 15 and 45)
Format: tube

Claims:
- water resistant
- oil-free
- non-greasy

PLEASE NOTE: Because everyone's skin tone is so different and some people burn much more quickly than others, I WILL NOT review sun products for their ability to protect you from getting burnt. You must use your own judgement to choose the right SPF level. Instead, I'll comment on other features (scent, oiliness, etc)

To Purr About:
- light creamy formula
- absorbs very quickly
- moisturizing
- slight pleasant fragrance
- not very greasy

Claws Out:
- a little expensive compared to other sunblocks
- not water"proof", only water"resistant"

Final Comments:
I really love this sunblock. It's light and creamy and the scent is pretty light and is pretty nice. My only complaint is that you don't get that much for the price, so it's a little on the expensive side. On the other hand, it's Aveeno, a brand that I've had a lot of luck with. Because it's only water-resistant, this is more a sunblock to wear when you're just lounging around and not if you're planning on doing any rigorous or water-related activities.

Product Review: Jergens Natural Glow Express

Reviewer: S.K.Y.

Brand: Jergens
Name: Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer
Size: 120 mL
Price: $9.99 CAD / $7.99 USD

Shade Tried: Medium/Tan

In my continued attempt to hide my hideously white & scarred legs I’m trying this new product. Things I always look for in a self-tanner: whether it works, leaves any streaks or splotches, and if the results are a natural and looking tan.

From Jergens’ website: "Jergens natural glow express Body Moisturizer is the quick way to a natural-looking summer glow. With this breakthrough moisturizer you will begin to see colour after the first use. When used daily you will get more than a full shade of natural summer colour in just three days.”"

To Purr About:
- very sweet scent, but not as chemically as other skin tinting moisturizers/products that I’ve tried
- noticeable tanning in 1 day
- does not irritate my extremely sensitive skin
- reasonably priced

Claws Out:
- may leave streaks if you’re not careful – probably not the best for evening tan lines unless you’re a pro at application techniques
- scent is very strong & lasts very long
- a bit on the sticky/syrupy side

Final Comments:
I guess there’s a fine balance with everything - this product is VERY effective in giving you colour, but therefore leads to streaking if you’re not careful in applying it. The sweet scent is a bit strong for me, BUT since I got such amazing results in such little time I don’t have to put up with the smell for more than the prescribed 3 days. I was very impressed by the noticeable and quick results of this product – I’m not dark tanned, but it’s a major difference between my pasty white legs & my nice medium tone now. I’ll probably have to use it once a week to upkeep the nice looking tan, but it’s totally worth it.

Update: after a few days of not using the daily tinting moisturizer to upkeep my tan as suggested – I have very streaky legs. Hmmmm…..I can’t hold this against the product because it did what it said it would do, but I wanted to make a note of it.

Product Review: Neutrogena Sun Fresh Sunless Foam

Reviewer: S.K.Y.

Brand: Neutrogena
Name: Sun Fresh Sunless Foam
Size: 118 ml
Price: $15.99 CAD

Shade Tried: fair/medium skin tones

It’s summertime again, and that means it’s time for shorts! In an attempt to look nice and tanned without visiting the tanning salon or baking under the sun I’ve picked up this neat product. I’ve tried Aveda’s self-tanner in the past & was pretty impressed with the results, so I have high hopes for this one. I think with any tanner the all important quality is whether it works, leaves any streaks or splotches, and if the results are a natural and looking tan.

From Neutrogena’s website: "This ultra-light formula goes on easily, absorbs evenly, and looks absolutely radiant—never fake or flat."

To Purr About:
- Easy to apply.
- It is ultra light – doesn’t feel greasy and absorbs into the skin quickly
- Does not dry out the skin
- Does not seem to irritate my sensitive/itchy skin
- No noticeable streaks

Claws Out:
- Has a slight chemical smell to it as all tinting creams/moisturizers seem to have
- Does not moisturize the skin
- Only minimal skin colour difference noticed
- A bit on the pricey side

Final Comments:
I used this product about once a day for about 10 days which was about half the bottle on my legs and didn’t notice any major tanning of my legs. Being a loyal Neutrogena user I am a bit disappointed with the results of this product. I think I personally prefer a product that is combined with a moisturizer (because I have such naturally dry skin) so I don’t have to worry about washing this product off after a few hours and moisturizing in addition. I think I’ll try some other products out there – I’m interested in seeing how Neutrogena’s Sun Fresh lotion so perhaps that will be my next venture.

Size: 1 oz / 30 ml airless pump
Price: $32 USD

Product Notes:

I thought this was a timely post because now that summer is over (okay, I know, it's not officially over, but once Labour Day passes, I consider my summer officially over), it's always good to keep in mind that our skin still needs to be protected from the harsh effects of the sun.

Elle's Top 5 Self Tanners PREVIEW

All right, those long winter coats are coming off, the skirts are out and it's time to show off that skin! And let's be honest, a lot of us would much rather be a few shades darker than what winter leaves us. Well, here's some great info to get you started.

In the June 2007 issue of Elle, which hits newsstands on (approximately) May 15, 2007, their Top 5 list focuses on Self Tanners as voted by their readers. And we have a sneak preview!

I haven't tried any of these self-tanners yet and have been sticking to Jergens, but after seeing this Top 5 list, I'm thinking of trying the Dove or Shiseido one.

1. Shiseido Daily Bronze Moisturizing Emulsion
2. Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel
3. Dove Energy Glow Daily Beauty Body Lotion
4. Lancome Soleil Flash Bronzer Tinted Mousse
5. St. Tropez Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion

The June issue of Elle also has a great Beauty IT list that features some cute new fruit scents and lipglosses, which I think would work really with the warmer spring weather. Get the scoop on products such as:

- Burberry Summer (mmmm, a grapefruit and freesia scent - I think I need to get this!)
- Estee Lauder Heritage Collection FaceGlow (comes in an beautiful enameled case)
- DiorPlay Brilliance Extreme Shine Lip Gloss in Pink Essentials (in a super-cool crystal-studded case)

Don't forget to pick up the June issue of Elle magazine (with a stunning Jessica Biel on the cover) on newsstands soon! For more Top 5 lists and other great articles on beauty, fashion and everything else a girl needs to know, check out their site at elle.com.

Product Review: Jergens Natural Glow

(As promised, all reviews in March will be for products that cost less than $10 CAD!)

When this product launched a few years ago, Oprah mentioned it on her show and it flew off the shelves so fast that it was impossible to find for months and was selling for upwards of $30 USD on eBay!

Well, now the craze has died down and tons of other brands have put out their own "tanning" moisturizer.

Jergens notes: "...delivers an optimum amount of color to even out and enrich the appearance of your skin. Formulated with a unique blend of non-drying Erythrulose, DHA and essential moisturizers to gradually develop a soft, natural glow, without streaking or orange coloration often experienced with using a self-tanner. Simply moisturize your skin to keep a beautiful and natural glow. It comes in three different shades to complement your unique skin tone."

The idea behind this product is that it's not a "self-tanner" but a moisturizer with a hint of colour. So, with daily use, you gradually "build up" a natural looking tan. The advantages with this gradual buildup is that you don't have to worry about those tell-tale streaks, uneven patches of colour or getting colour onto your clothes, towels, etc.

I've been using Jergens natural glow Daily Moisturizer for Medium Skin Tones for a few summers now, mainly to maintain a nice "tan" look, although I don't bother with it during the winter. The eventual colour is a great match for my Asian skin after it's gotten a little sun.

My main complaint about this product is the smell. There's a very persistent, slightly chemical smell that's fairly strong and quite noticeable. And since this is a "daily-use" product, the smell is constantly on my skin. I also noticed that the smell transfers, so after a week, my bed sheets smell too. The only solution is to not apply this cream every day and only once every 3 days or so to keep the smell from building up.

I do like this product because it's very natural looking and easy to use, although I think maybe this coming summer I'll try another brand, preferably one that's fragrance free.
