Lest We Forget...

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada, Australia & UK and many other countries (also known by other names in other countries, such as Armistice Day and Veterans Day).

According to Wikipedia:
"Remembrance Day...is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. The observance is specifically dedicated to members of the armed forces who were killed during war, and was created by King George V on 7 November 1919"

To me, it's a solemn day to give thanks to all the brave men and women who fought in any war so that the we can all live in a free world. We give thanks to those with the courage to make the ultimate sacrifice so that the rest of us may never have to.

The famous poem, In Flanders Fields, often memorized by Canadian school children, was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote it on May 3, 1915, after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, the day before.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

This year I started noticing who were the people wearing poppies & those who didn't. I sometimes wonder when I see people without it if they a) Just lost there's b) Don't think it's worth the small contribution or c) some other reason. I hope people remember that the money they donate will go towards assisting Ex-service people, Veterans and dependants that their own lives at risk for our country. So to all those out there - please remember to buy & wear your poppy next year.
