Product News: essie Fall 2011 collection

Brand: essie

Where to buy: salons and beauty shops worldwide

Essie's 2011 fall collection of shades was "inspired by the clean lines and simple elegance of post-war styles and the colors of handbags...comprised of classic shades reinvented for modern times....reminiscent of autumn with complex colors that are a throwback to the fashions of the 1940's and the 1950's."

- power clutch: enigmatic darkest green
- very structured: creamy burnt sienna
- lady like: pretty, demure pink

Product Review: Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal Roll-on

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Naturally Fresh
Name: Deodorant Crystal Roll-On
Size: 90 ml / 3 oz. liq.
Price: $3.99 USD

From their website: "Our elegant natural fresh deodorant crystal roll on combines all natural ingredients like alum to eliminate odor causing bacteria while providing 24 hour non-staining hypoallergenic protection. With natural fresh deodorant crystall roll on, chamomile is added to soothe and moisturize shaved underarms. Non-sticky, non-greasy-feels like a luxurious skin lotion, all of this with our natural roll on deodorant.”

To Purr About:
- acceptably effective
- 100% natural (aluminum free)
- affordable price
- hypoallergenic & fragrance free
- didn’t stain or flake
- didn’t leave my skin feeling dried out or flakey

Claws Out:
- was watery and didn’t absorb in to skin quickly – had to wipe off excess
- isn’t as effective as other deodorants I’ve tried that have chemicals in them

Final Comments:
In the summertime I am constantly paranoid about my feet smelling badly. So I was very intrigued when I saw this product. Not only did it advertise that it would help eliminate food odor, but it was 100% pure and natural. I’ve heard people say that anti-persperants and deodorants are bad for the skin and can clog pores, so I was hoping to find a product that was a bit better for my body but protected me from sweat and odour.

This product is actually just a deodorant and isn’t an anti-persperant, but I don’t suffer from excessive sweat, so I wasn’t too worried about it.

Similarly with Naturally Fresh's foot spray I was impressed (and skeptical) when I read the list of ingredients of this product and found that purified water and natural mineral salts were the first ingredients listed. I believe the ingredients are listed in order of content, so that would mean water is the majority of this product.

I've been wearing this product for a while now and it's withstood normal days as well as workout days which is quite impressive. Although I did sweat during and after working out, it kept me decently odor free. I don’t have major armpit odor (that I know of) and found this pretty effective, but it’s not as strong as non-natural products I’ve tried. I have to admit that on the most extreme hot days I had to revert back to my chemically antiperspirant/deodorant.

If you suffer from stronger armpit odor this might not be the product for you. Naturally Fresh does have a hard crystal version of this product that might be more affective though.

Finally, the most impressive thing about this product is that it doesn't leave my skin feeling dried out like other products I've used in the past. In fact, it feels like I don’t have any product on at all which is amazing as my skin can breathe and feels happier.

Product Review: OXY Clinical Acne Solutions pack

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: OXY
Name: : Clinical Acne Solutions pack
Price: approx. $14.99 USD

What it says in the press release:
The OXY Clinical Acne Solutions pack consists of a:
- Clearing Treatment
- Advanced Face Wash
- Hydrating Therapy.

All OXY Clinical products contain an advanced delivery system technology that helps the product to work continuously over time. And, the OXY® Clinical Clearing Treatment has been proven to kill 99% of acne causing bacteria in 8 hours, so it starts working right away.

Before you read my review, please note that I don't really have a problem with acne. I don't have perfect skin, but acne has never been a major problem for me - now or in the past. My skin tends to be a bit oily (I have that T-zone thing) and is definitely less sensitive to products than some people I know (like Suziesaurus).

To Purr About:
- no more acne!
- affordable price

Claws Out:
- skin wasn't extremely dry after use
- after a few days of consistent use, I did feel a slightly irritating tingle on my skin
- has a chemical smell

Final Comments:
I used all three products in this pack regularly for about two weeks and, although it did make my skin feel drier than usual (nothing a little moisturizer couldn't fix), I must say that I didn't get a single pimple after a week of use. The ones I did have faded away within a few days of starting this regime.

That being said, like I mentioned before, I rarely get bad acne, so I can't be sure if my pimple-less state was a result of my usual skin or from using the OXY treatment. I did notice that the few pimples I did have faded away without leaving the usual dark scarring that I get for a while afterwards.

If you have sensitive skin, however, I do recommend doing a patch test beforehand as I know that some people have mentioned they have a bad reaction to this product. Keep in mind that any products created to treat acne problems is going to be harsher on your skin, so it may not be for everyone.

If you're like me and want some quick clean-up of an oilier complexion, then this three-pack is an affordable way to get a nice treatment for your acne problems.

Product Review: Yes To Cucumbers Facial Towlettes

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Yes To Cucumbers
Name: Hypoallergenic Facial Towlettes
Size: 10 Travel Towelettes
Price: $3.50 CAD

What it says on the product site:
“Our famed facial towelettes in mini! If you like the larger version, you'll love these. Like their big brothers, the Yes To Cucumbers On The Go Facial Wipes are 98.7% natural, hypoallergenic, and made from organic cucumber and aloe vera. Designed for the trendy traveler, this package of travel towelettes will fit right into your purse (or a TSA size clear plastic bag!) to cleanse, soothe and remove makeup to refresh your beautiful face, regardless of where you are.”

To Purr About:
- convenient travel size
- refreshing fresh scent
- moisturizing
- hypoallergenic
- paraben, SLS and petroleum free
- 98.7% natural
- also available in packs of 30 towelettes
- left skin feeling refreshed

Claws Out:
- didn’t clean my skin as well as normal cleansers would
- made my face break out a bit

Final Comments:
On a recent trip to Shoppers Drug Mart I was looking for travel friendly products
for our upcoming vacation. I spotted this cute product and since it was on sale
decided to give it a try. I’ve tried Yes To Carrots products before, but never the
Yes To Cucumbers line. I was pretty excited to see they had a travel sized set of
wipes as I find many brands have wipes, but none that I can slip in to my toiletry
bag without taking up too much space. I am a glutton for convenience.

I really did enjoy using these towelettes – they have a nice fresh scent, are very
moisturizing and left my skin feeling refreshed. However, they are no match for
real facial cleansers/scrubs and water, and I found I started getting pimples a few
days into the trip. As a result I probably will not be picking up this product again.

Product Review: Annabelle Smudge Paint

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Annabelle
Name: Smudge Paint
Size: 0.07 oz / 2 g
Price: approx. $10.95 CAD

Shade Tried: Plummed

What it says on the box:
- water resistant + long-lasting formula
- crease-resistant finish
- highly pigmented colour
- glides on smoothly

I love Annabelle eye products but wasn't sure about the Smudge Paints. They looked a little more complicated than my usual easy-breezy routine could handle, plus I'm no expert, so brushes and wet shadows aren't really my strong point.

I was excited to check out the Smudge Paint in Plummed, as the box and promos led me to believe that it was a deep, rich purple shade and I do love my purple eyeshadows!

The brush is built into the lid (as you can see from the photos - it's in 2 parts). You pull it out of the top, flip it upside down and snap it into place, giving you a longer brush to manage.

To Purr About:
- rich, dark pigments - a little goes a long way
- not greasy or too wet, the product glides on and then stays put
- dries almost instantly
- really great staying power
- lasts all day (and night)
- convenient little packaging

Claws Out:
- you really have to snap the brush together or it will fall apart
- purple is a little too dark (it's almost grey/black) for me
- opening is a little small

Final Comments:
At first, I was a little wary because the purple that I was expecting was more like a very dark charcoal purple (not the plum you would imagine when hearing the name), but after I snapped the brush together and started applying the product, I was hooked.

The brush is easily put together and isn't too bad (it's a little light, but you get used to it). I would have preferred the jar opening to be a little larger as you can't really swipe the brush across the product as much as you just dip it downwards into the shadow. It's definitely going to be difficult getting anything out of the nooks and crannies when this starts running low.

The shadow itself is amazing. It's very light and has a slightly greasy feel (reminds me of oil paints!) but once you brush it on (it literally glides on) it doesn't feel greasy at all. It dries within seconds and after it's completely dry - it doesn't move! It doesn't crease or fade or melt away. I put it on bare eyelid (one of the rare times I didn't use any primer) and it didn't budget at all during the day.

Because the brush is quite small and pointed, you can use Smudge Paints as liners or as shadows (I created a kick-ass smoky eye with this shade!)

At the price point, it's still fairly affordable and a little goes a long way so it's not too much of a bank-breaker. In fact, even though I already have Tar and Plummed, I'm tempted to go out and pick up Skyline as well - a dark smoky blue.

My September Glymm Box

My husband really likes to tease me. Last month, when my Glymm box arrived at home, he texted me with just two words "Glymm box". This month, he didn't even bother words - he just emailed me a photo of the package. haha.

I couldn't wait to get into this month's goodies - last month one of the items in my Glymm box was a lovely Smashbox lip gloss that has become my daily go-to gloss so I was excited to see what awesome things I would discover this time around.

In my September Glymm box:
- john masters organics blood orange & vanilla body wash, 1 fl. oz. / 30 ml
- john masters organics blood orange & vanilla body milk, 1 fl. oz. / 30 ml
- Vasanti blush in Rockies, 3.2 g / 0.11 oz
- Oscar de la Renta Esprit d'Oscar, sample size
- more jelly beans!
- dark red alligator print makeup bag

Besides delivering my monthly jelly bean hit, I really love the deep red makeup case that I got. Ok, I know it's not exactly a beauty product in the classic sense, and I have a ton of makeup bags, but it's still a really lovely shade of red.

I haven't had a chance to try any of the products yet, but I'm looking forward to the body wash and body milk because "blood orange and vanilla" sounds like a really cool combination.

So, anyone get something different in their Glymm box?

Cinnamon Kitten Q&A with MUA: Tracy Peart

Makeup Artist Q&A Session with: Tracy Peart

Based in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

How I connected with Tracy: Believe it or not, the first time I saw Tracy, I was in the audience, watching a taping of Cityline (long story). Then I saw her on Twitter and connected with her there. Tracy is absolutely wonderful - warm, friendly and enthusiastic. I sent her a message asking if she'd be open to answering a few questions on my blog and the rest is, as they say, blogging history!

Connect with Tracy:
- Blog: www.tracypmakeup.com
- Facebook: www.facebook.com/TracypMakeup
- Twitter: www.twitter.com/TracypMakeup
- email: tracyp.makeup@gmail.com

Psst...yesterday Tracy announced some super exciting beauty-related news! Check it out at the end of this interview!

* * * * *

Tracy Peart

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a freelance makeup artist, who was born and raised in Toronto, ON Canada. I’m
loud, silly, a great listener (kinda have to be to be a makeup artist) and a self-proclaimed movie critic…Lol!

I love my job, and I thank God everyday for the fact that I get paid to paint and talk all day!

Are you a full-time MUA? If not, what else do you do?

Yes, I am a full-time makeup artist. I am the makeup artist to Toronto’s Breakfast
Television
and Canada’s longest running lifestyle TV show Cityline.

What inspired you to become a MUA? Where did you learn/practice your art?

I originally studied Broadcasting Radio/Television. After I graduated, I worked as a PA (Production Assistant) on films and music videos. I would be so fascinated at what the models in the music videos would start out looking like and what they’d end up looking like after hair and makeup. The transformation was intriguing to me. I started to hang out with the makeup artists on set watching what they were doing, and finally decided to go study makeup.

Tracy working on Tracy Moore, host of CityLine

Do you have a specialty or a signature look/colour?

Clean glamour...that’s the look I do the most and the best!

What do you love most about being a MUA? What do you hate?

I love all the different people I get to meet, paint and have wonderful conversations with. I’m a chatty Cathy, so the fact that I get to talk to and learn about so many different people everyday is a DREAM!

What I hate about being a MUA, is setting up and packing away the contents of my kit. I swear everyday when I lay out all my makeup and put it all away again, I say to myself “One day, I’m gonna be big enough to have an assistant to do this for me”...Lol!!! I just HATE that part of my day!

In your career as a MUA, what has been your favourite or most creative client job?

This might sound corny, but my favorite clients are the two ladies I do everyday and that’s the lovely Tracy Moore (host of Cityline) & Dina Pugliese (Breakfast Television). There are several reason why: 1) Both of them are the reason I have my job on those shows. Together they went into my boss and requested me to be their exclusive makeup artist, and for that I am truly grateful to them both. 2) They’re both a complete blast to work with! I laugh with them every morning and I’ve become true friends with them both outside of work. 3) They’re both incredibly supportive of my work. Lastly, 4) They’re both beautiful, making my job to paint their faces remarkably easy...Lol!

Dina Pugliese, co-host on Breakfast Television

If you could do makeup for a photo shoot for anyone in the world (living or dead, real or fictional), who would it be and why?

Lauryn Hill for sure!!!! I think her face is gorgeous and would be a great canvas to play on. She has beautiful dark colored skin, that bold colors show up on beautifully, stunning high cheek bones and those fabulously full lips. Especially how the top lip doesn’t have a cupid’s bow…it’s just rounded. LOVE IT! Ok, you can see I’ve studied her face quite a bit...Lol!

What makeup brands do you use most in your job and why?

Although I use many many different brands, MAC is the brand most used in my makeup kit. I think MAC stays on the cutting edge of trends, and releases new products monthly. MAC is a well rounded line, with tons of products. They have almost anything you need, especially a range in foundation colors, and that’s very important to me. Being a woman with dark skin, I know how few makeup lines carry products for my color, so I appreciate lines that have a wide variety. Lastly, I have the longest relationship with MAC out of all the lines. I know their products the most.

What are 3 beauty products you can’t live without?

1) Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy “Natural Highlighter” in Gold Luster
2) Beauty Blender Applicator Sponge
3) Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer

What current makeup trends are you loving? Any trends you hate?

I’m loving all the bright bold colors being worn on the eyes and lips...just not at the same time. Lol! Makeup is there for us to play with and have fun! There’s no current trends I hate.

Tracy on the set of Breakfast Television

What’s one great beauty tip that you can share with my readers?

My great tip for makeup, is to just wear it!!! I don’t care who you are, makeup can always enhance your beauty. Don’t be afraid to play with it. If you’re not sure how to use it, ask a professional at your local department store beauty counter. If you’re stuck in a rut, change it up by buying a BOLD eyeshadow or lipstick color and blend it with your favorite everyday color and that’s how you can slowly incorporate trends into your makeup routine. Makeup shouldn’t be a chore, it’s meant to be FUN!!!!!!

* * * * *

As I mentioned at the start of this Q&A post, yesterday, Tracy announced some really cool news - she's launched an iPhone app! Called MakeupiQ, it's "a quiz and makeup game mixed into one. Answer the skill testing makeup questions...the more answers you get correct, the more makeup and hairstyling you can apply to your model. The goal of this app is to help you learn more about makeup application, and have fun while you're learning."

You can compare scores with other players, plus you can email photos of your model to your friends!

Ready to test your Makeup iQ and see how you do against your friends and fellow makeup junkies? You can download the app in the iTunes store, or click here to find out more.

Product Review: Michael Todd Vitamin C Complex

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Michael Todd
Name: Vitamin C Complex
Size: 30 mL / 1 fl. oz.
Price: $62.00 USD

What it says on the product site:
“Our Vitamin C Complex is for those with signs of premature aging such as sun spots, dehydration and loss of elasticity and radiance. High concentration of vitamin C ester gently protects the skin while improving damage caused by the sun and free radicals.”

To Purr About:
- made with 70% organic ingredients
- certified vegan
- pleasant light citrus scent
- convenient pump dispenser with cap
- absorbs into skin quickly
- made skin feel supple and got rid of some areas of minor irritation
- made skin look and feel healthier
- evens out skin tone
- didn’t irritate my super sensitive skin

Claws Out:
- a bit pricey
- can be a bit rich for oily skin types

Final Comments:
In addition to all the stuff I’ve read, my previous experience has made me a firm believer that vitamin C is great for the skin. So I was extremely excited to try Michael Todd’s Vitamin C Complex serum.

Having used this product for a few weeks now I have to say it’s amazing. The subtle citrus smell is so nice and refreshing and it absorbs quickly in to my skin. I find my complexion is improved and my over all skin tone is much nicer since I started using this product. Also, I have an area under my lips that is always dry and flaking and irritated – I’ve tried many moisturizers and even Vaseline to reduce the irritation and nothing had worked, but this product has completely gotten rid of it.

I found the product a bit rich, and since I have oilier skin I didn’t need to use moisturizer after applying this product.

The one major con I can think of is that this product is a bit on the pricier side. That being said, a little of this product goes a long way and I believe the price is somewhat comparable to other similar products on the market. And also with such great results it’s definitely worth it if you can splurge on that one important product.

On a completely side note, I found that taking the cap on & off caused the silver paint on the bottle neck to start flaking off which was a bit annoying because now every time I pick up the product to apply it, I end up with shiny flakes on my hands. I’ve ditched the cap for now since I won’t be travelling with the bottle, but next time I’ll put the cap aside until I need it for travelling purposes.

How sweet is your face? Is it candy sweet?

Ok, I know this is a beauty blog, but this contest is so much fun, I had to share it!. Plus, it involves some of my favourite candy, so I just couldn't resist.

Maynards is giving Canadians a chance to 'Make Your Face a Maynards' and transform their sweet looks into a delicious candy for the chance to become the face of Maynards next candy - literally!

From now until September 30, 2011, candy-face wannabes can upload a photo of their best Maynards face to the Maynards Canada Facebook page and morph their good looks into a virtual candy caricature. One sweet stand-out submission will be selected to become an actual candy based on one of Maynard's most popular treats: Sour Patch Kids, Fuzzy Peach, Sour Cherry Blasters, or Swedish Berries (OMG, I LOVE Swedish Berries!).

Sweet-toothed officials will choose the top 10 faces, which will be showcased on the Maynard's Facebook page beginning October 17. A random draw from the top 10 entries on October 24 will determine the grand prize winner. The winner of 'Make Your Face a Maynards' will receive a year's supply of Maynards candy featuring his or her actual face and a cash prize of $5,000, plus a trip for two to Toronto for a photo shoot and a factory tour to see how Maynards candy is made.

Ready to become a star (well, a candy star, anyway)? You can read the full rules, regulations and candy-face-making tips on the Maynard's Facebook page. Have fun!

Product Review: Olay Luscious Embrace Cleansing Bodywash

Reviewer: Suziesaurus

Brand: Olay
Name: Luscious Embrace Cleansing Bodywash
Size: 354 mL / 12 fl. oz.
Price: approx. $6 CAD

What it says on the product site:
"Olay Luscious Embrace Cleansing Body Wash - discover the lush, flourishing beauty of the Amazon when you plunge into this rich lather with jojoba butter and crushed orchid extract. Feel it envelop your body like a botanical-infused steam treatment."

To Purr About:
- seems to clean efficiently
- consistency is nice and thick
- smell is pleasant

Claws Out:
- not very moisturizing

Final Comments:
I recently tried Olay’s Silk Whimsy Cleansing Body Wash and was interested in trying the other line of their new body collection which is the Luscious Embrace series.

The first thing I noticed about this product when I squeezed it on to my loofah scrubber is the icky dark colour. I’m not used to my body wash being such a dark hue, but that’s easy enough to get over.

Although I did find the consistency and smell of the Luscious Embrace Cleansing Body wash to be an improvement from the Silk Whimsy line I found it didn’t leave my skin feeling moisturized. I have extremely dry and irritable skin so this is a huge issue for me.

I think this body wash would be effective for people with oilier to normal skin, but probably will be looking for a more moisturizing body wash next.
