Product Review: The Body Shop Puree Body Lotion

Brand: The Body Shop
Name: Puree Body Lotion
Size: 250 ml / 8.4 fl oz
Price: $16.00 CAD

Scent Tried:
- Pink Grapefruit

"Super light, refreshing moisture with pink grapefruit oil, rich in fatty acids, and vitamin-rich pure grapefruit water to cool, hydrate and help keep skin looking firm and supple."

That's the claim that The Body Shop makes. And I put it to the test. I bought this moisturizer along with the Pink Grapefruit Body Butter (watch for a review on that soon). Mmm, I just love the smell of pink grapefruit!!!

To Purr About:
- handy pump makes dispensing easy
- smells exactly like pink grapefruit when first pumped out of the bottle
- light, non-greasy moisturizer absorbs reall quickly into the skin
- within seconds the moisturizer is absorbed and it doesn't leave any greasy residue or anything, skin just feels smooth and soft

Claws Out:
- the smell changes slightly once it's on your skin so it doesn't smell as recognizable as pink grapefruit
- because it's so light, it's not as rich as some other creams/moisturizers, so if you have extremely dry skin, this may not be the best option
- considering my usual body lotion is a huge bottle of Jergens for about $7, this small bottle for $16 is a little bit on the pricey side, which is a major deterrent for me.

Final Comments:
In the winter my skin can get extremely dry, by during the summer, it's way too humid and sticky to use my winter body moisturizers. This Puree Body Lotion is perfect and smell heavenly. It's extremely light and absorbs instantly, leaving my skin feeling ultra soft and smooth and just hydrated enough. Love it. And, this product comes in so other scents, like Papaya, Strawberry and Satsuma, so if I ever tire of smelling Pink Grapefruit (HA!) I have many other fun options!

Product Review: No7 Sheer Temptation Lipstick

Brand: Boots No7
Name: Sheer Temptation Lipstick
Size: 0.1 oz
Price: $13.00 CAD

Shade Tried:
- Excite

When I heard that Boots' No7 line of cosmetics was going to be available in Canada (exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart) I was pretty excited. For those who aren't familiar with Boots, it's a great pharmacy/cosmetics store, similar to Shoppers Drug Mart that I discovered when I was in London last year. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to buy No7 products during my trip, but I was happy to see some of the No7 products at a new Shoppers which opened by my house recently.

This lipstick is hypo-allergenic and has been dermatologically tested. No7 promises that the "creamy formulation allows smooth application."

To Purr About:
- the shade I got was sheer dark red
- the lipstick glides on very easily and feels great on my lips
- sheer colour looks great
- not sticky, not goopy and not drying
- not a high-shine, but perfect for daytime work looks

Claws Out:
- I wish the price was a touch lower so that I could try all the shades affordably
- lipstick isn't that long-lasting and comes off easily

Final Comments:
Even though it doesn't have the lasting power of some other, more matte products, I'm insanely happy with this No7 lipstick and am definitely going to try some of the other shades in this line. I've been looking for nice, sheer, subtle shades that add a hint of colour without too much shine for work and this one is perfect. This is my first No7 product purchase and it's amazing, so I'm definitely going to try out some more from this brand!

Don't Believe the Hype...the Mascara Hype

One of the reasons I started this blog was because I was EXTREMELY tired of seeing slick ads that made products look great and then being disappointed when I purchased the product and it didn't live up to expectations - ie. smooth skin, long-lasting lipstick, instant curl mascara...

Speaking of mascara...hasn't every girl searched far and wide for that perfect mascara? Dries quick, curls, lengthens, darkens, thickens, babysits, cooks, does the laundry...oh wait, that's me, getting carried away.

Anyhow, Britain's advertising watching group, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), has criticised L'Oreal today for its Telescopic mascara commercial featuring Penelope Cruz that "exaggerated" the product's effects.

The ASA said L'Oreal misled consumers by failiny to make it clear that Cruz was wearing fake lashes in the commercial. What? Fake lashes in a commercial that's advertising the benefits of mascara??? Why does that sound so wrong?

The ASA also criticised L'Oreal for claiming that their Telescopic Mascara made lashse "60% longer", since some people may "take that to mean their lashes would actually increase in length, rather than just look longer" (by the way, I've read that statement several times and it still confuses me - if lashes LOOK longer, shouldn't that mean that they ARE longer?...wait, does this mascara perform optical illusions?)

In the future, L'Oreal must make it clear in ads if models are wearing fake lashes.

By the way, if you look at Penelope in these ads...umm...would anyone actually believe that their lashes will look like hers if they use this mascara? Who can't tell that she's wearing falsies?

Product Review: Almay Smart Shade Blush

Brand: Almay
Name: Smart Shade Blush
Size: 15 mL / 0.5 fl oz
Price: $12.99 CAD / $9 USD

Shade Tried:
- Berry

I really wanted to try Smashbox O-Glow - it seemed like a really cool product, but when it launched it was sold out at the Sephora I went to and then afterwards, when the hype died down, I couldn't bring myself to pay the $35 pricetag. The small sample I got at the store wasn't that convincing either, as it was so bright PINK.

So when Almay brought out it's own "colour-changing" blush, I was skeptical, but when I saw it on sale for $9.50 CAD, I figured it was cheap enough and gave it a try.

Almay says that this product "contains microscopic shade-sensing colour beads that are activated when you apply the product" and it "transforms into a shade that complements your skin tone."

To Purr About:

- the shade I brought was the deepest one (the others being Natural and Pink). When it comes out of the tube, it's a pale-ashy pink colour, but once on the skin it turns into a lovely deep rose
- creamy and easy to blend into the skin
- the deep rose of Berry was subtle and looked like a natural flush on my skin
- the colour isn't too bright or dark but if you prefer a deeper colour you could layer on more
- the blush lasted well through the day

Claws Out:
- it takes a little practice to get the application down, as you have to work quickly - if you leave it in one spot, it turns darker on that spot and if you rub too hard, the product disappears off your skin completely
- I wear mine over my powder foundation and under my finishing powder, but if you use any liquid products (ie. foundation) you may have to work harder at blending and not rubbing out other makeup
- this takes longer to apply to get the amount of colour I want compared to my usual blush products (MAC's Powder Blush and Erth Minerals Mineral Blush)

Final Comments:
I was really pleasantly surprised at how well this product worked and how happy I was with the results. This does change colour after application and the flush I end up with is natural looking and lasts quite a long time - generally a little longer lasting than my powder blushes. However, sometimes when I'm being lazy in the morning, it's easier to sweep a powder blush over my cheeks quickly than to deal with the blending and layering it takes to get the Almay Smart Shade Blush looking just right.

That all said, this is something I would use, and the price is much easier to deal with than the other "smart" blushes out there.

Rating (out of 5):

NEW Product Line: MAC Flashtronic

"Colour and light fused to perfection with the pearlized shimmer of Mineralize Skinfinish, complemented by 6 new marbled shades of Mineralize Eye Shadow and our 4 new Tinted Lipglass. It's all the flash you need." (description from MAC site)

As with many of MAC's daring and bold product lines, this one's in Limited Edition too.

While MAC's previous new offering, C Shock was all about bold, loud colours, Flashtronis is soft, shimmery and will add a lovely glow to any complexion.

I absolutely love the way the eyeshadows and Skinfinish look - the jumbled chaotic shades in one pan look ultra-cool and the colours are subtle, earthy and grounded. It almost looks as if they've captured a planet with the beautiful mixed colours!

Tinted Lipglass
- A unique lip gloss that creates a high gloss, glass-like finish or a subtle sheen
- Can be worn alone or over Lip Pencil/Lipstick
- Contains Jojoba Oil to soften and condition lips
- Packaged in a convenient bottle with a sponge tip applicator that provides a quick, smooth, even application
- Colours: Perfectly Pink, Flashtronic, Young Spark, Electro-Lush

Mineralize Eye Shadow
- A sheer, pearled, mineralized powder eye shadow with up to 4 shades baked together in 1 pan
- Superfine & lightweight - provides a softly tinted, reflective shimmer
- Subtly builds colour & shine
- Colours: By Jupiter, Tectonic, Ether, Mercurial, Lovestone, Quarry

Mineralize Skinfinish
- A luxurious velvet-soft powder
- High-frost metallic finish
- Smoothes on: adds buffed-up highlights or an overall ultra-deluxe polish
- Colours: Northern Light, Gold Spill, Global Blow

One of the best places to find coupons and promo codes is KeepCash.com. For the beauty obsessed, a quick browse through the Health & Beauty coupon section showed deals and codes for popular beauty online retailers such as The Body Shop, SpaLook, SkinStore, Avon and Beautytrends.

Brands they carry that I'm familiar with include Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, MAC, Smashbox and many others. But there are interesting brands that they carry that I've never tried (or heard of) before - brands like Kose, Fiji Blend, Pupa and Payot.

StrawberryNET offers products from around the world - it's a great place to look for items you've read about online but can't find in-store. I have definitely spotted a few brands I'd like to learn more about. Check out the StrawberryNET deals now!

Product Review: Clinique Superbalm Lip Treatment

Brand: Clinique
Name: Superbalm Lip Treatment
Size: 7 mL
Price: $15.00 CAD

My sister, S.K.Y., absolutely loves Clinique's Superbalm Tinted Lip Treatment so I decided it was time for me to check out this lip product (you know me - I want to try ALL lip products in existance!!!)

Instead of the tinted version I decided to get the clear one and use it as a "treatment" to give my lips a rest from the 60+ lip products I currently own that that do have colour.

To Purr About:
- no fragrance, which is nice
- my lips have shown some improvement with repeated use

Claws Out:
- I found this product extremely sticky
- for the price, this is an expensive lip balm, and it doesn't feel as good as some of my favourite lip balms (Rosebud Strawberry Lip Balm and Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm)

Final Comments:
Although this lip balm really does make my lips feel moisturized, I find the formula a little too sticky for me. And it's a little expensive for a product that I only find so-so. I definitely wouldn't buy this again, but to each his own. S.K.Y. really likes it so I think this is one product that will depend on what you're looking for in a lip product. If you want to read why S.K.Y. loves this product, check out her product review here!

Product Review: L'Oreal Glam Shine

Brand: L'Oreal
Name: Glam Shine
Size: n/a
Price: approx. $7.00 CAD

Shade Tried:
- Goddess

Available in 10 sparkle-filled shades, L'Oreal Glam Shine promises brilliantly sparkling lipcolour. "Its luminous, multi-faceted finish lends intense shine and elegance to the lips that, thanks to Glam Shine's fluid gel texture, enjoy the additional benefits of moisture and softness."

To Purr About:
- formula is non-sticky and very moisturizing
- extreme shine and sparkle
- the shade, Goddess, is light and adds a sparkly look to my lips that's really nice
- much lighter-feeling than I expected since it's so shiny
- applicator brush makes lipgloss easy to apply

Claws Out:
- there's a slight odour to the product that isn't very pleasant
- lipstick isn't long-lasting and comes off easily

Final Comments:
If you're looking for something with intense shine and it's promised "multi-faceted" sparkle, this product is definitely fun and glam enough for a sexy going-out look. It's light and glossy and not sticky, the only drawback is that it doesn't have much staying power.

GUEST Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Concealer

Guest Reviewer: puddlejumper

Brand:
L'Oreal
Name: True Match Super-Blendable Concealer
Size: 5.2 mL
Approx. Price: $8-10 CAD

Shade Tried:
- fair/light (coordinates with foundation shades N1, N2, N3)

To Purr About:
- convenient size
- love the brush applicator
- doesn't look heavy
- provides moderate coverage (I use it primarily for under-eye circlees).
- similar to a product by Clinique that I tried and was dissatisfied with (because it was too heavy).
- easily blendable, as it claims

Claws Out:
After using it for awhile, the container gets "goopy" very easily since the inside rim of the container doesn't seem to wipe off any excess product as you pull it out (for example, the way a mascara wand does). This is definitely a defect and I hope L'Oreal improves it. It is irritating to always have to wipe off the outside container after use.

Rating (out of 5):

Thanks for the review, puddlejumper!

Product Review: Erth Minerals Blush

Brand: Erth Minerals
Name: Mineral Blushers
Size: at least 4 g
Price: $12.50

Colours Tried:
- Petal
- Primrose

Many gals have been switching over to mineral makeup for the lasting power and benefit to your skin.

Erth Mineral blushers are made of pure, crushed mica and iron oxides and promise to add colour and sparkle to all shades of skin.

Available in 4 pretty shades, very little blusher is needed in order to give your face a healthy, natural flush.

I've been faithfully using MAC Powder Blush in the popular Blushbaby for years, so wasn't really looking for a replacement, but I recently tried Erth Minerals blusher and was pleasantly surprised.

To Purr About:
- blends easily and smoothly into the skin
- products lasts a full day
- although a little sparkly in the jar, shine is barely noticeable once applied
- so lightweight that it doesn't feel like I'm wearing any blush at all

Claws Out:
None, really, except that if you've never used a mineral blush before it takes a little practice to get used to the extremely loose and light powder of a mineral product

Final Comments:
Ever since testing this blush, I've been using it on a daily basis. Especially now that it's summertime, a lightweight product is most welcome. It barely feels like I'm wearing any product at all and the blush lasts all day. Both shades I tried look completely soft and natural. I would highly recommend this product to anyone. A little goes a long way and the price is very reasonable for a mineral product.

For more information or to purchase, check out the Erth Mineral Makeup site. .

NEW Product: Almay Smart Shade Blush

Brand: Almay
Name: Smart Shade Blush
Size: 11 mL / 0.37 fl oz
Approx. Price: $12.99 CAD / $9 USD

For those of you that thought that Smashbox O-Glow was a little too, um, PINK (most girls don't look natural in fuchsia) Almay has come out with their own transforming blush and at a third of the price of O-Glow! I saw it at my local PharmaPlus for $12.99 CAD. I sampled the Natural shade and it was pretty nice (I didn't get to try any on my cheek and haven't tested it enough to do a review yet) but the colour did change on my skin and to a natural looking colour.

Product Notes:
- contains microscopic shade-sensing colour beads that are activated when you apply the product
- transforms into a shade that complements your skin tone
- antioxidant blend of vitamins and grapeseed nurtures your skin
- sheer, radiant colour

Shades:
- Pink
- Natural
- Berry

NOTE: I just bought this blush yesterday afternoon so watch for a product review soon!

GUEST Product Review: Nivea Aqua Sensation Anti-Shadow Eye Creme

Guest Reviewer: S.K.Y.

Brand:
Nivea
Name: Aqua Sensation Anti-Shadow Eye Creme
Size: 0.5 oz
Approx. Price: under $15 CAD

Claims made by Nivea Aqua Sensation Anti-Shadow Eye Creme:
- instantly invigorate the eye area with the cooling sensation of pure moisture
- has a soothing quick absorbing formula with refreshing Cucumber extract that instantly revives the delicate eye area
- enriched with Magnesium, Ginseng and light reflecting pigments
- reduces the appearance of puffiness and under-eye shadows
- eye visibly regain a fresh and radiant look

I was about to buy the Clinique eye cream I love so much, but I decided my wallet needed a break. Why did I pick the Nivea product? For 3 main reasons:
1. It was at eye-level & right beside the Neutrogena products I was picking up (which proves product placement DOES work)
2. It was a good price
3. My sister mentioned that she had heard good things about Nivea

To Purr About:
I've used the product for about a month now & I've found that it does help moisturize the area around my eye & keep it supple throughout the day. In addition, I've noticed slightly less darkness under my eyes...and again...I must stress that it was only $10ish.

Claws Out:
There were a few things I didn't like about this eye cream. Firstly, it didn't give me that aqua sensation feeling that I was hoping for - that cool, soothing, refreshing feeling that is great for curing eye-tiredness. Seccondly, I don't think the effects of the cream were anything amazing. It was a rich moisturizer and that's probably it - I still had dark circles under my eyes.

Final Comments:
Back to the cucumbers for me I guess.

Product Review: Erth Minerals Moth Veil

Brand: Erth Minerals
Name: Moth Veil
Size: 13 g
Price: $11.00

A very translucent mineral powder with a slight tint, this moth veil can be used alone or over foundations and concealers. It's perfect for concealing pores and giving your face a soft, more even and less shiny look.

Ultra-fine and silky in texture, Erth Minerals guarantees that you'll love it.

Right now I've been using the Moth Veil as a finishing powder. After my usual makeup application, I finish off with a light dusting of the Moth Veil all over my face.

To Purr About:
- blends easily and smoothly into the skin
- I have a VERY shiny T-zone and usually have to blot/powder at least 6-7 times a day while at work. With the Moth Veil, I've found I've only had to powder once or twice
- so lightweight that it doesn't feel like I'm wearing an extra layer of product at all
- no strong fragrance

Claws Out:
None, really, except that if you've never used a mineral product before it takes a little practice to get used to the extremely loose and light powder

Final Comments:
I LOVE this product. It's so light and translucent, that once I apply it, I don't notice it at all, yet it keeps the shine off my T-zone all day. It's definitely a keeper. I highly recommend this product to anyone. A little goes a long way and the price is extremely reasonable for a mineral powder.

I love e.l.f. cosmetics! :) How can you go wrong with products that are $1 and actually look good? I love their lip glosses and at $1 each I don't have to feel guilty about buying THREE at a time! Yay!

Well, dear readers, I'm officially retiring the Beauty Buys series. It just depresses me to see how much I spend on beauty products and that takes the fun out of shopping sometimes. Plus, since I feel the need to do this post every week, it makes me feel like I need to buy at least one beauty product every week, and that is definitely not helping my budget! So, until further notice, Beauty Buys is on semi-permanent hiatus (unless I go on a special spree that I have to tell you about!)

I'm going to try to develop a different weekly feature, so if you have any ideas, let me know!

See something I bought that you want to know more about? Did you see a product for a better price? Post a comment!

Product Review: Clinique Touch Base for Eyes

Brand: Clinique
Name: Touch Base for Eyes
Size: 0.03 oz /1 g
Price: $17.50 CAD

Colour Tried:
- Canvas Light

Okay, this is one of the other items I bought in order to get the May/June 2007 Holt Renfrew Clinique bonus.

Currently I "prime" my eyes with MAC Eye Paint in Untitled (it makes my eyeliner and eyeshadow last all day/night without fading or creasing) so I figured this would also be a great base product for my eye products. Clinique claims that this is "no smear, no fade, no creasing. Stays on until washed off. Also works as holding base for other eye makeup."

To Purr About:
- nice light formula that goes on easily
- when I apply my eyeliner on top, my eyelids don't feel dry and my eyeproducts just glide on
- keeps my eyeliner and eyeshadow in place all day long until I remove it with eye makeup remover
- non-greasy, no creasing
- is shimmery, adds shimmer to the eyelids. If you put product on top, adds shimmer to your products as well (can be good or bad, depending on the look you were trying to achieve) - good for going out looks

Claws Out:

- is shimmery, adds shimmer to the eyelids. If you put product on top, adds shimmer to your products as well (can be good or bad, depending on the look you were trying to achieve) - not something I really want for my daytime makeup
- compared to my MAC Paint, the eyeliner and eyeshadow don't end up as vibrant when placed on top of the Clinique Touch Base for Eyes

Final Comments:
This product is light and really does help eye makeup (both eyeliners and eyeshadows) stay on my eyelids the entire day, even when it's really warm outside. No creasing or anything until I remove everything with eye makeup remover. Love the staying power. The shimmer is nice when you want to go out at night, but not something I want during the day when I'm in an office, so that's a minus. Guess I won't be getting rid of my MAC Paint just yet.

GUEST Product Review: Lancome Flextencils

Guest Reviewer: Stina R

Brand:
Lancome
Name: Flextencils, Full Extension and Curving Mascara
Size: 6.5 mL
Approx. Price: $29 CAD

Colour Tried:
- Black

I have actually tried other types of mascara from this line include L'Extreme, Definicils and Hypnose and have found the Flextencils is my favourite.

To Purr About:
- after a few strokes lashes are instantly longer, I would say at least 1/6th longer than they were originally
- this is the only mascara out of the line that actually curves the lash, so there is no need for an eyelash curler!
- the formula was NEVER clumpy, even at the end of the tube
- the mascara does not flake off your eyelashes, it's more of a gel consistency so if rubbed it stays put (even non-waterproof)

Claws Out:
- had trouble removing it at night with just water and soap, but a basic eye makeup remover will get the job done
- for the average consumer, the mascara is a little pricey
- only available in brown and black
- when put on bottom lashes on a humid day, it tends to blend slightly into the lower eyelid

Final Comments:
I am a mascara whore, my lashes are medium fine, so it's hard to find a product that will plump, curl and lengthen them. I have tried many others from name brands such as Dior, Maybelline, Revlon, Benifit, CoverGirl and even the cheaper version of Lancome, L'Oreal. The money I put into trying numerous other mascaras is probably more than the one time purchase of this Lancome mascara. Yes, it is a little pricey, but definitely worth it.

GUEST Product Review: Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser

Guest Reviewer: puddlejumper

Brand:
Neutrogena
Name: Fresh Foaming Cleanser
Size: 200 mL
Approx. Price: about $8-11 CAD depending on where you buy

Product claims:
- combines two cleansing steps into one
- removes eye makeup without stinging
- rinses cleanly away leaving no residue

To Purr About:
I lives up to all its claims and easily removes eye makeup and anything else on your face! Very good product for the price. I have used a variety of cleansers (including Clinique 3-step system) but I always come back to this one for its convenience, especially when travelling (since it eliminates the need for me to pack a separate eye makeup remover and little cotton pads).

Claws Out:
None, except that it would be nice if the pump top could be closed.

Final Comments:
This is a great cleanser for most skin types since it is alcohol and soap-free, hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic. I have sensitive skin and have never had any problems with this product.

Product Review: Rimmel Infinite Colour

Brand: Rimmel
Name: Infinite Colour
Size: 0.135 fl oz / 4 mL
Approx. Price: $6.74 CAD

Colour Tried:
- Wear It Well

The third zero-transfer lipstick that I tried (the previous 2 were L'Oreal products), one end of this product is the lipcolour and the other end is a gloss coat. As with most other 2-in-1 lipcolours, you apply the colour first, let it set and then apply the topcoat.

Unfortunately, there were no testers where I bought this product, so I had to go by "look" alone. And even more unfortunately, I ended up with a shade of pink that was just too far into the fuchsia family for me, so the lipstick was a write-off after I tested it for this review.

This product promises up to 10 hours of colour and gloss. I never kept it on long enough to test that claim, but it definitely wasn't going anywhere during the time I had it on.

To Purr About:
- yummy sweet smell
- after letting the product set, I took my fingers and tried very hard to rub the lipstick off - there was absolutely NO colour transfer at all!
- the lipcolour is very soft and smooth and doesn't dry out your lips
- the top coat is less sticky than other zero-transfer product top coats I've tried

Claws Out:
- as with many lipsticks that don't budge, this lipstick is still slightly drying on the lips
- because of the smoothness of this product, this one takes a little longer to "set" than other staying products
- the colour on my lips was much brighter than in the tube, so a nice subtle rose ended up being a hot pink, so beware if there are not testers around!

Beauty Buys: June 24-30, 2007

No Beauty Buys this week readers!

I'm still trying to curb my spending this month, so these Beauty Buys are going to be a little bare until the end of the summer (at least that's what I'm trying to do!)

Anyhow, HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE! Go celebrate in Red & White style!
