Product Review: Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme

Brand: Burt's Bees
Name: Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme
Size: 0.60 oz/17 g
Price: $7.99 CAD

My sister, known on this blog as S.K.Y. recommended this product to me as she knows how much I love the smell of lemons and also how crazy I am about products that make my hands softer. It seems a little pricey at first since it's quite a small tin, but you only need so little of the product at one time that it will take a long time to finish it off.

To Purr About:
- the lemon smell is so intense and so real that sometimes I just sit there, sniffing it to get my fill of that wonderful lemon scent
- does soften cuticles and gives a light polish to nails

Claws Out:

- although it does soften my cuticles in the short term, I'm not sure if it improves the look of the cuticles in the long run
- The product is quite waxy so stays shiny and slightly oily around the fingertips for awhile

Final Comments:
I have fallen in love with this product's smell alone and reach for it whenever I feel the need to rub something into my cuticle area. One little trick that S.K.Y. taught me - at first I was having an insanely hard time trying to get any product from the tin. I rubbed and rubbed my finger across the surface and still only seemed to be able to get a minimal amount of the creme. Then I was told to dig into the product to and take out a tiny chunk. After that it was really easy to get enough product out with one small rub. It's as if there needed to be some space so that the product could move around.

GUEST Product Review: CoverGirl LashExact Mascara

Guest Reviewer: Rachael

Brand:
CoverGirl
Name: LashExact Mascara
Size: 4 mL/0.13 fl. oz
Approx. Price: $7.80 USD

Colour Tried:
- Black Brown

To Purr About:
The brush made applying the mascara very easy. The brush also tended to stick less to the lashes, therefore allowing a smooth application. The brush did in fact reduce the amount of clumping.

Claws Out:
The brush was not able to hold enough mascara, therefore I had to spend more time putting it on.

Final Comments:
The thing that really convinced me to buy this product was the new "revolutionary" brush. I have a hard time finding a mascara that did in fact reduce clumping, so when this came out I simply had to try it. It is practically impossible to stop clumping overall, but since buying this product I have gotten very close to being "clump-free". If you ever need to own just one mascara product, I would suggest you buy this one because it really is revolutionary (and under $10).

Rating (out of 5):

NEW Product Line: Rimmel Underground

I've only found the Rimmel Underground products at a PharmPlus near my work so far. Still nothing at the 3 Shoppers Drug Mart I've checked out. The Rimmel Underground link on Rimmel's site isn't working right now and I've had a couple of readers ask me about this line since I loved their lipstick so much.

So, I grabbed a brochure and here's the lowdown on this product line and it's fun names:

"The mood of the Rimmel Underground line is all about the edgy fun of using new cosmetic textures, innovative forms, and eclectic colours to foster experimentation and create new looks that express your individuality. Rimmel Underground means inventive looks and addictive colour - always surprising, always wearable."

Product Review: Rimmel Underground Sweet Stuff Lipstick

Brand: Rimmel Underground
Name: Sweet Stuff Lipstick
Size: 0.09 oz/2.5 g
Price: $7.99 CAD

Colours Tried:
- Guilty
- Bite

I recently discovered a new Rimmel line called Rimmel Underground. Reminiscent of Hard Candy or Urban Decay, this line is all about the dark colours and shiny products.

After I tried their Loud Mouth Lip Gloss (a product review will be coming soon!), I decided to try the Sweet Stuff Lipstick as an alternative to the Loud Mouth product, which comes in a tiny pot.

I had a really hard time deciding on a colour, as many of the colours are similar and so it was hard to pick one that I'd be happy with. So in the end, I ended up with two, one light and one darker colour.

To Purr About:
- this lipstick advertises that it has a sweet smell and it actually has the most wonderful strawberry smell and a sweet taste
- the product is light and smooth and glides onto the lips
- very high shine
- sleek black lipstick tube with cool silver logo

Claws Out:

- I had a tough time deciding on the colour to buy and a large part of that was because the shades are really similar so although it was fun to try and choose one, it's not because there's a huge variety of colour. However, this line is really new, so it may expand to more colours
- although it's supposed to be a "sheer" colour, the end colour is quite vibrant so may be more pink than how it looks
- I would have liked to have been able to buy a sheet, natural colour. There's a Bare shade that I saw online, but I haven't been able to find it in-stores yet.

Final Comments:
Currently I've only been able to find this product in one PharmaPlus by my work, so haven't been able to price shop. I'm hoping to find it in other locations/stores soon. It's not even on the Rimmel website, so it's a little weird. Although some of the other products in the line are a little too risque for me (the colours are quite bold and sparkly) it may be a fun line to experiment with and have some fun without spending too much money.

I LOVE this lipstick - the colours, the feel and especially the smell is amazing. So far I've tried two products in the Rimmel Underground line and really like them both. I'll definitely be trying other products in this brand soon!

Product Review: Almay Ideal Lipgloss

Brand: Almay
Name: Ideal Lipgloass
Size: 0.22 fl. oz/6.4 mL
Price: $7.59 CAD

Colour Tried:
- Wine Shimmer

This was one of my impulse lip product purchases (I seem to make a lot of those) after I got a new job. It's a brand I've never tried before, but I really liked the way the colour looked in the tube. Well, that was my first mistake, as I should know better than to spend money on something that doesn't offer a tester (I hate that!).

Several years ago Maybelline had a limited edition lip gloss (Wet Shine Liquid Diamonds in Firecracker Red) that I was in love with. It was a deep shade of red that looked amazing on me. And since then I have never before or after found another red lip product that looked as good, I'm constantly trying to find a replacement (darn those limited edition products!)

This product...was not it.

To Purr About:
- the colour was pretty true from what it looked like in the tube and what it looked like on my lips and was a beautiful shade of red
- very glossy, high-shine product

Claws Out:
- brand new, the product stinks, and I mean that it smells like plastic gone way past its expiry date
- perhaps it's because I'm not used to it, but the applicator is a very floppy brush, so it was difficult to control and I made a mess. As a rule, I prefer lip products that I can touch up without too much time in front of a mirror, especially lip glosses
- gloss has a very liquid texture, and the colour I bought was quite dark, which meant, that as I was applying it, the brush would push the product around on my lips, leaving some areas much darker than others. And when I went over it again with the brush to try to fix it, the product would be pushed around again, still leaving uneven patches of colour
- and don't even think about rubbing your lips together or eating anything - the liquid nature of this product meant it moved around, leaving the colour uneven and more often than not, coming off your lips altogether

Final Comments:
Considering there are so many lip products available on the market, I definitely will not be buying this brand of lip gloss again! And for the price, there are literally hundreds of other lip products I might purchase instead. So ladies, if you're thinking of buying this particular line of Almay lip gloss, I wouldn't recommend it unless you can try it for free first and end up liking it.

Product Review: Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion

Brand: Skin MD Natural
Name: Shielding Lotion
Size: 120 mL/4 oz
Price: $25 USD

You all know how hard it is to find a greaseless, easily-absorbed moisturizer and so I was really excited to try a new product. Beyond just a "moisturizer", this is a "shielding lotion" and claims to not only reduce the amount of epidermal water loss, but to increase the skin's ability to moisturize itself.

A shielding lotion is "a lotion that forms a protective barrier on the skin and keeps out irritants and chemicals. It also allows the natural oils and moisture to remain in the skin so it can heal better...Skin MD Natural is promptly absorbed, without the slightest hint of any greasy or oily feeling or residue, transforming the outer layer of skin into a hydrating invisible shield."

To Purr About:
- the lotion really is promptly absorbed within seconds and leaves almost no greasy or oily feeling at all
- very light lotion
- slight scent (but a nice one)
- several minutes later I washed my hands (you know what usually happens with normal creams and hand-washing!) and nothing happened! the lotion didn't wash off at all

Claws Out:

- $25 is a lot to pay for a shielding lotion, although to be fair, you don't need to use a lot of it to get good results

Final Comments:
Although I find it hard to spend the money to purchase this lotion on a consistent basis, it really is one of the lightest and non-greasy hand lotions I've ever tried. It would be especially helpful to people who suffer from skin problems, such as eczema or psoriasis though.

To get more information, receive a free sample or to order some of this great lotion, check out Skin MD Natural web site here.

Thanks very much to Pete for contacting me and sending me a sample!

GUEST Product Review: Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser

Guest Reviewer: S.K.Y.

Brand:
Neutrogena
Name: Pore Refining Cleanser
Size: 6.7 fl. oz tube
Approx. Price: $10 CAD

(Description from the Neutrogena site):

Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser lets you visibly reduce the appearance of pores just by washing your face.

This dermatologist-tested formula with Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids and Microbeads delivers visible results. First, it sweeps away dead surface skin and refines rough, uneven patches. Then, it penetrates deep into pores so they appear smaller and less visible.

To Purr About:

I can't remember why I bought this cleanser, but after trying it, it's definitely made it into my "preferred list". I use this product once a day (as I have super sensitive skin) and find that it's a great cleanser. I've noticed my complexion is a bit healthier looking these days and my problem pores do appear to have reduced in size a bit.

Claws Out:
My pores are still noticeable. I'm still on the prowl for that perfect product. Although this one is one of the better products I've come across I'm optimistic that there is an even better product out there for me.

Elle's Top 5 Self Tanners PREVIEW

All right, those long winter coats are coming off, the skirts are out and it's time to show off that skin! And let's be honest, a lot of us would much rather be a few shades darker than what winter leaves us. Well, here's some great info to get you started.

In the June 2007 issue of Elle, which hits newsstands on (approximately) May 15, 2007, their Top 5 list focuses on Self Tanners as voted by their readers. And we have a sneak preview!

I haven't tried any of these self-tanners yet and have been sticking to Jergens, but after seeing this Top 5 list, I'm thinking of trying the Dove or Shiseido one.

1. Shiseido Daily Bronze Moisturizing Emulsion
2. Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel
3. Dove Energy Glow Daily Beauty Body Lotion
4. Lancome Soleil Flash Bronzer Tinted Mousse
5. St. Tropez Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion

The June issue of Elle also has a great Beauty IT list that features some cute new fruit scents and lipglosses, which I think would work really with the warmer spring weather. Get the scoop on products such as:

- Burberry Summer (mmmm, a grapefruit and freesia scent - I think I need to get this!)
- Estee Lauder Heritage Collection FaceGlow (comes in an beautiful enameled case)
- DiorPlay Brilliance Extreme Shine Lip Gloss in Pink Essentials (in a super-cool crystal-studded case)

Don't forget to pick up the June issue of Elle magazine (with a stunning Jessica Biel on the cover) on newsstands soon! For more Top 5 lists and other great articles on beauty, fashion and everything else a girl needs to know, check out their site at elle.com.

Product Review: E.L.F. Plumping Lip Glaze

Brand: E.L.F.
Name: Plumping Lip Glaze
Size: 0.6 oz/ 1.9 g
Price: $1 USD

Colour Tried:
- Baby Doll (Sugar Peppermint scent)

I don't normally use any lip plumping products because I have fairly full lips and also because my lips get irritatedvery easily by many of the ingredients that lip plumpers use. And by irritated, I mean "in severe pain".

I decided to give E.L.F.'s Plumping Lip Glaze a try anyway (hey, it's only $1!). Well, the plumping action was severely disappointing, but the lip gloss half was so good, it made up for the lack of plumping power.

There are 2 parts to the product - the clear glaze, which acts as a base plumper, and the tinted glaze, which adds colour and continues to provide plumping action.

To Purr About:
- product claims to be hypoallergenic and my lips actually didn't react with any irritation to either the clear or tinted glaze
- both glazes are super-light, non-sticky and offer a beautiful high-shine gloss
- light sweet, minty scent, but no weird taste
- my lips felt moisturized and hydrated, even with continued use
- sponge applicator is easy to use and applies glaze smoothly and quickly

Claws Out:
- I did notice a fuller lip immediately after applying the clear glaze, however, the extra plump only lasts about 5 minutes
- because there are 2 glazes in 1, you only get half the product. I didn't use much of the clear glaze since I didn't need care for the "plumping" and finished the tinted glaze half in less than a month

Final Comments:
Although I wouldn't buy this product for its plumping properties, I really like the tinted glaze. I haven't tried all of E.L.F.'s lip products yet, but I'm hoping that they offer a normal lip gloss that's similar in texture and feel so that I can buy that full-size product instead.
